A few years back, as I was contemplating a place to hang my hat for the balance of my life, I briefly considered P-Town. A trusted friend cautioned me and suggested that he put me in touch with a friend of his who had made the Cape his home for 40+ years. His friend called me late one afternoon, and for the better part of an hour or so, diplomatically, without encouraging me, nor discouraging me, reiterated much of what was in the article. I could tell that he wanted me to clearly understand that things had changed. As we said our goodbyes and I thanked him for his input, his last comment to me was, "If you do decide to come, you'd be a welcome addition, but come with eyes wide open."

"We may have lost our haven, but now, everywhere else, it's OK to be gay. Maybe that's a decent trade."

We've dealt with this very issue in Key West for a long time now. It's just the way things go... I don't love the island any less :)

As the author said, perhaps it's not such a bad trade off. We wanted acceptance and now we're getting it.

Rehoboth Beach is incredibly expensive. Straights are complaining about noise and house parties coming from gay tenants and owners. Not sure both can Co exist.

Thanks for the article. I vacationed often in P-town when I was in my early 20s, and I met my spouse there, while both of us were staying at a gay guesthouse on Commercial Street. We went back to stay at the same place on the 40th anniversary of our meeting, and visited with former neighbors from Philly who had moved there to live in 1990. They loved the place, but sadly noted that it was changing in just the ways mentioned in the article. We have been trying to decide whether to go back next year on our 50th anniversary for another visit, but I suspect that we won't. Some things are better left in nostalgic memory.

I don't know.

It was kind of fun when they were scared of us.

Now...we've got a seat at the table...but the dinner party is mercilessly boring.

Sorry to say, but you can't put toothpaste back in the tube.

Equal rights suit me fine, even if that means living with a little taupe normalcy

I think it's more competition for prime vacation property rather than acceptance. Mainstream is figuring out that we also run good bars, restaurants, and hotels!

I believe that if you are relatively happy where you are in life, you should accept all the twists and turns, mountains, valleys and deserts that you brought you here. Change inevitably brings both loss and gain, although it may be hard to perceive which is which sometimes. Increasing freedom from fear is both expensive and priceless; it's a long road and the journey continues.

May I also respectfully mention that acceptance of different lifestyles is a two-way street?

That of course is debatable...;)

I haven't been to Ptown in 20 years, but I rather enjoyed the drive there from Connecticut. It was the drive back that was a bitch. I was actually contemplating returning this summer, but I wonder if I should just let my fond memories be.

True. But prime waterfront property is becoming scarce. Provincetown key west and fire island are a pain in the neck to get to.

KW isn't that bad. Unlike Ptown and FI, you can easily fly all the way in. EYW is convenient and new.

I have been spending time in P-town every summer for quite a few years now. I have noticed the change of more straight people being around, and families with children have become common. A part of me is sorry to lose the sense of community but the replacement of families coming who accept and interact with gay people is a sign of progress. It's like so many bars that are now mixed rather than gay. We are assimilating into the mainstream and we have to get used to it. This is good.

You are right about KW. You can now fly direct. But so can everyone else. It is now a port for cruise ships I believe. A friend who just came back from the island house in KW said it is much more integrated. What is nice about a solid gay community is the freedom of PDA. Something that straights have but not gays.

Hi, not sure what PDA means but from someone who yearly went to Key West, not now, but now goes to PTown I just have to lament, bring back those good old gay days. PTown isn't the same, the afternoon, now I'ms aying 2pm, the bars are empty. I love hanging out inside and out at gay bars, nothing. At night, well I haven't seen anything. And close at 1am. I don't know, if someone has suggestions for having fun in PTown, I'd like to hear about it. Thanks

Yes, cruises come and go from KW. They have for the better part of 15 years.

The island is straight-friendly. It's also still very gay friendly. PDA is definitely not an issue for gay guys (or gay women for that matter).

While not the mecca it once was, it's still a fantastic place to vacation :)

I have never been. I assumed it was always packed. Maybe just during bear week or other events.

Try Islamorada. More fun, better eye candy, and very gay friendly.... Just tons of sexy local boys from South Florida that come to play.;) ...AND no cruise ships.

Islamorada: Great beaches. Dead otherwise. They all come down to KW to be social.

Even with cruise ships, Key West is still the gay clearinghouse.

Well that's not true, but God bless you. The South Florida boys stay as far away from KW as possible. You've obviously have never been off shore. ;)

I am in the Keys for 4-5 months out of the year. I'm pretty sure I know of what I speak.

Off-shore? What's the name of your boat again? :)
