Are there stats anywhere on the users here. Nothing that violates confidentiality. Not individual's..... for the group as a whole. Mean and median age, location, etc.

Seems fairly obvious to me that the users skew older.... but then, Im older and maybe I'm projecting.

Just curious, and maybe helpful in messaging.

As far as I can tell, this site doesn't use any external analytics, such as Google Analytics, or any of the third-party ad trackers. Those would be necessary to get any meaningful demographic statistics, but they would also sacrifice a lot of our privacy. Thanks, Daddy, for that.

There were some extensive demographic metrics from quantcast.com available last November - @Guy Fawkes published a link in the Deli. I don't know if he wishes that to be republished but I was astounded at the volume and population metrics. Yuuuuge

Here's that thread, but the link provided by Guy Fawkes doesn't seem to show much interesting data anymore.

I don't get it, and admit I didn't read the other tread referenced my Mr. Slater. Do I understand correctly, we're not tracked on the forums, but we're tracked on the reviews. If so, are we tracked when we post reviews, or when we read reviews, or both? And, what exactly does "tracked" entail?

I stand corrected. Although it doesn't look like we're tracked when we're on m4m-forum.org, there is a tracker on daddysreviews.com.

To be clear, daddysreviews.com and m4m-forum.org do not track anyone. We don't have enough data to track anyone.

There are external companies that track ALL traffic on ALL websites. We happen to be websites. That is what Guy previously linked to.

Deej, with all due respect, I don't think that's accurate. On daddysreviews.com, there is a script from quantserve.com that uses a cookie to track visitors. This company may or may not collect any personally identifiable information, but if they know our individual demographics, they're certainly tracking us to some degree. And, they definitely have the capability to correlate our visits here with visits to any other website that also includes the quantserve.com script/cookie. If you've ever noticed that sites you visit, and products you browse on amazon.com, show up in your Facebook ads, that is using a similar mechanism.

I invite you to educate me if I'm wrong, but I don't think it is technically possible to do this. A lot of our browsing is tracked by scripts like quantserve.com, or google analytics, or advertising networks, but I don't think external companies can track traffic on sites like m4m-forum.org that don't include any external scripts or resources.

In any case, just like we should all assume that everyone is HIV positive, we should all assume that all of our activity on the internet is tracked. If you're concerned about your privacy, use your browser's "incognito" mode, or "private browsing" mode which will largely prevent this tracking, and consider using a VPN which will protect you from tracking by your ISP.

If you're really concerned about privacy, your best option is to disconnect the internet and never connect it again. ;)

You're correct -- I'd forgotten about that script.

As far as demographics goes, IIRC the only thing the forum asks of you at signup is your gender (and that's only because at least one iteration of the software required at least one required field).

As I started this post...

Concern with internet privacy was not my motivation for asking about stats.

I just wanted to have some sense of the age and geographics of the other users to enhance "relatability"

I dont want to make a comment or ask a question based on an assumption that this is a Johnny Carson crowd, when they can only relate to Jimmy Fallon.

Last week, I made what I believed to be a very clever comment about work, likening something to the Rat Pack. I was met with blank stares and the question "eeeew, have you seen rats here in the office? "

I suggest you to do this, it would be really interesting for everyone.

As we do not have data, we can collect it ourselves. Of course it will not be statistically valid, it will be eschewed by willingness to participate, as we cannot try random samples, but at least it will be fun, and give us the picture of the universe of those willing to respond.

Create a survey with as many categories as more populated areas, and let the participants vote.

Example:

NYC/Boston

DC/Baltimore

Chicago

etc.

There are members here from all age groups and all walks of life, and it's an ever-changing mix. Don't sweat it.

Older than...?? 40? 50? The average millennial? Jack Benny's true age? (he died when I was 10, but I'm pretty culturally astute)

Just say what you want (as long as it fits within the boundaries of the terms and rules of this site) and let the reader figure it out.
