The bars/clubs are mostly clustered in the Warehouse District around 4th St.

All personal opinion of course.

Highland has the best and most diverse music. I like to be there earlier in the night. It gets very, very crowded later in the night because they do after hours. I'm not fond of shoulder-to-shoulder crowds, but if you're happy just watching, you can find some room to breathe upstairs overlooking the dance floor.

I usually bail on Highland around 1 a.m. and go to Rain. Second best music, a great patio and a decent dance floor. The drinks are also cheaper. :)

There is also a club called "V" that is very hit-or-miss. They have a lot of private parties there so you never know whether you can get in or not. That means it is sometimes open to the public and no one shows up, but when it's good, it's very good. I had a great time there last year after the Pride parade.

The Iron Bear is on 8th St. It's a -- you guessed it -- bear bar. Not really my thing but not because of the clientele. They have no dance floor. That's a positive for some people, but for me it's a deal breaker.

There are also a number of "mostly straight" bars/restaurants on Rainey St. I'm not overly familiar with them, but someone I know and trust loves that area. You can Google Rainey Street to see what's available.

Enjoy all that Drafthouse goodness: Now that Tim League is back at the helm of operations, it feels as if Alamo is where it needs to be. They wandered for awhile in all of that expansion.

I did the festival last year. Awesome experience.

I'm really looking forward to it. The Drafthouse is legendary.

There are folks who make a living out of waiting in line for a fee for those desiring to eat Frankin BBQ. It's often sold out by end of lunch. You and many many more can always get into Salt Lick BBQ down near Buda http://saltlickbbq.com/. Then there's that place in nearby Lockhart.

Not much has changed from above.

"V" has closed, so that's no longer a club option.

Torchy's still has the best tacos -- breakfast, lunch or dinner. The Baja Shrimp and The Democrat are my favorites.

It looks like Mike Gaite will be in town. You can't go wrong with him or Kurtis Wolfe for an outstanding BFE.

Be careful on 6th Street after midnight. We just had another fight that turned into a senseless death. Much better to stick to "our" part of town down on 4th Street. We don't have gay bashings and no one ever died from drag queen shade. ;)

I guess 6th Street has gotten worse. Back in the 80's, went there with some friends from Houston. Got my pocket picked by a woman who distracted me by grabbing my junk. Later, when we were at another bar, went to pay for drinks, and had no money. Ran outside to look for her. Nowhere in sight. Friends followed, and we ran into a couple of policemen. Told one I was pickpocketed. He laughed at me, and said to his partner, this poor ole drunk (not to drunk not to remember) thinks we can help him. Never have been to Austin again.

I'll let that Torchy's comment slide this time... Hell hath no fury like overpriced, bland tacos ;)

Blasphemer!

Let me recommend for the future...

Vaquero Taquero

Gringa's

Don Gumes

OneTaco

Las Trancas

It's not that Torchy's is straight up bad, but it's what I would call white-people tacos. They're loaded with toppings, but the flavor is inauthentic and off. Consider however, that I lived in San Antonio for many years, so the scale in which I judge tacos is probably insane.

:)

Thanks for the recommendations. I ended up spending 10-12 hours a day at the cinema so I ate there and at Snooze.

I've met Mike Gaite. He's super sweet. Kurtis Wolfe is mighty cute, but I'm not into being dominated. Still, I appreciate your suggestions.

Drafthouse is amazing. The Austin location(s) are probably the most special, as they continue to operate under Tim League's personal touch.

Which one of Maltin's interviews did you go to?

The cinema was great. The organization of the event was great. Every film I saw save one was a winner. A lot of folks said this was the best FF they'd been to as far as film quality.

I saw Maltin w/Gilbert Gottfried. Were you there this year?

I would agree. The whole spectrum of films shown was awesome. Plus, I'm in anytime someone is showing Monster Squad on a big screen.

I was only there for a day, but ended up at the Maltin interview with Vince Vaughn.
