Rudolf Nureyev (1938-1993) had an early career with the Mariinsky Ballet in St. Petersburg. In Paris in 1961, helped by the French police and high society acquaintances, and despite KGB efforts to stop him, Nureyev defected to the West. His was the first defection of a Soviet artist during the Cold War and it created an international sensation. He went on to dance with The Royal Ballet in London, and from 1983 to 1989 served as director of the Paris Opera Ballet.

Rebellious and merciless, Nureyev established himself as a sensational performer who dared to make modern dance and classical ballet collide. His passionate choreography brought a new importance to male performers.

@Moondance, I realize Nureyev is remembered now for doing many things, not just dancing. He is partly responsible by posing with too many well known people in photos.

He even was the star of a road company version of Rodgers and Hammerstein's musical "The King and I."

If the pictures in this thread are any indication, he was photographed by some of the very best photographers who ever lived!

But, the photos available do not fully communicate his talent. That's not @Moondance's fault.

Despite his good looks, without dance the very best photographers would not have taken his picture

I do think the second picture above by Mr. Avedon (the nude entitled "Paris 1961") comes as near showing Nureyev's art as a still photo could ever capture. It is simply breathtaking in subject, form and composition, even though slightly out of focus!

Years ago, a good friend of mine and I saw this gorgeous "creature" in a performance at The Opera House in San Francisco. At the conclusion of the ballet, he and I left our balcony

seats and sauntered to the very front of the venue and feasted our eyes of Nureyev. He was such a gorgeous "creature" and superb dancer!

Had a big cock, too, as revealed in that lovely photo that are amongst these!:rolleyes::rolleyes:

NUREYEV From Russia With Love

This 2007 BBC documentary explores the lesser-known story of Nureyev's years as a ballet student in Leningrad, and three years as a soloist with the Kirov, before the West had heard of him. Ninety minutes total -- broken into 6 parts, following. (The defection isn't covered until Part 5.)
