Si do you think it is possible for the photographer not to have a constant hard on?

this reminds me of the Jake Deckard "Dirty Director" films where he starts out directing but ends up participating; that may provide an answer to your question!

Anthony Friedkin (born 1949) is an American photographer whose works have chronicled California's landscapes, cities and people. Born in Los Angeles, he has taught photography at both UCLA and California Institute of the Arts. Friedkin's topics include surf culture, prisons, cinema, and gay culture. His work is included in major museum collections including those of New York's Museum of Modern Art and The J. Paul Getty Museum.

The Gay Essay

In 1969, at age 19, Anthony Friedkin began to chronicle gay life in Los Angeles and San Francisco, hoping to increase its visibility and contribute to a better understanding of it. His photo essay captured a time of sexual revolution.

Images from The Gay Essay were shown, and well received, in Europe and Asia before they were ever displayed in the United States.

In 2014, Yale University Press released The Gay Essay, a book containing 75 portraits from the series.

From June 2014 to January 2015, images from The Gay Essay were featured at San Francisco's DeYoung Museum to

coincide with the 45th anniversary of the Stonewall riots. The exhibit included materials from the artist's archive that conveyed the historical context of the work.

WALKER IN 1944

Henry G. Walker died in Miami in 1996 at age 75. He started at LIFE magazine in 1948 as a contract photographer and joined the staff three years later. In 1951, he was assigned to Washington as a White House photographer. One of his most famous photographs shows the silhouetted figures of John F. Kennedy and his brother Robert as they conferred in a hotel room on the eve of the 1960 Democratic convention.
