In regards to the question "Should they be removed?" comes down to:

  • Is it being abused?
  • Is it wasting server resources supporting the feature?
  • What resources are spent to remove the feature and does it offset the resources being currently utilized to support the feature?

"Is this feature so obtrusive so as to impede more common functions", and I think not.

I have a feeling its a feature directly built into the forum software and may not be easily removed if its not a simple option that can be enabled / disabled.
