On a recent flight, I sat next to a gentleman who is one of the top auto executives in Detroit. We had a pleasant conversation that ended up drifting into hobbies and interests. We shared an interest in travel but quickly got beyond that. He had recently developed an interest in cooking and was reading Fine Cooking magazine. I told him that I've enjoyed cooking for many years and recently starting reading that particular magazine.

A bit further, I told him that I had developed an interest in woodworking, at which point he pulled out a copy of Fine Woodworking (a sister publication to Fine Cooking) and recommended that I subscribe. It turns out that he's been a woodworker for years, with a particular interest in high-quality furniture.

In all the years M4M has been around, I don't recall this particular subject ever coming up before. So, escorts, sex and all related subjects aside, what do you guys like to do for fun? Any hobbies or interests out there? Anything that's brought you pleasure for a long time, the way years of woodworking have done for the gentleman I shared the flight with?

My interests are many and varied, here are a few of the high points:

Love tending the yard, gardening and my current big project is my 11 fairly new citrus trees. (All different varieties.) I also raise chili peppers, and make a variety of hot sauces.

Am a serious amatuer chef, love to cook, have friends over and entertain on both small and large scales

An avid reader, my reading list is quite varied. Am interested in a wide variety of topics. Lately, have read quite a bit on cosmology.

Am actively involved in dog rescue and especially the training of poorly socialized dogs, including dogs which bite or are not house trained. (ick) The only breed I work with is Dachshunds. No, I don't have a pet, would prefer having a boyfriend.

Really in to my house in general. Seems like I always have some project or other going to fix up or improve or remodel something.

In to astronomy in a big way, but since my little corner of Arizona isn't awfully dark, I don't have my own scope. But, I do have access to several very good instruments though.

RE: My other hobbies and interests

I have several other hobbies and interests:

I love to cook and am pretty good at it. I subscribe to several magazines, and often search the web for new recipes. I like to entertain, but don't do it much because my apt is so small. I do make Thanksgiving dinner for my family and friends, since its at someeone else's house.

I enjoy reading, different thing, mostly mysteries, but some history as well. I generally read at least two complete books a week.

I enjoy travelling (domestic and international) and have done that extensively in the last two years. I like Europe mostly, but this year I'm going to hit South America for the first time.

I am an amateur geologist and collect rocks and minerals wherever I go. I've amassed quite a nice collection and am thinking about taking some serious geology courses in my spare time. I like to hike, especially nature trails and parks--it gives me a workout while I can still search for rock and mineral specimens.

I also collect fancy wooden cigar boxes (even though I don't smoke cigars) and often use them as display cases (including the rocks and minerals I collect).

I like digital photography and enjoy taking pictures, but I must confess that I am a rank amateur. OK, I really suck at it. In fact, I believe that most of my pictures come out OK because of sheer luck (and of course, the digital camera's ability to instantly delete and retake, until you're satisfied). But am I getting better and enjoy learning more about this particular hobby.

Well, those are the highlights.

I collect submarine plaques. These are usually brass emblems mounted on wood and were presented to crew members on special occasions or for outstanding work. I have most of the early nuclear subs and some from WWII. Also collect submarine cachets and patches.

Another hobby is playing classical organ. I currently have a Rodgers simulated pipe organ in my house.

Plan to eventually add pipes and really irritate the neighbors. }(

I'm also an avid shooter and go to the gun range 3-4 times per month.

Other than that, I lead a boring life.

>Does your organ have a control labeled "swell to great" ?

My organ does swell to great (just ask some of the escorts I've hired)! :+ People have also used that phrase to describe my personality.

But, seriously, my organ does have that coupler. Nothing like it when I pull out all the stops at the end of a Bach piece.

With each post One Finger makes I love him more and more. As a child, I was OBSESSED with pipe organs. I use to climb into one of the oldest tracker organs in the Northeast. My mother was a church and classically trained musician. I have played the piano/organ ever since I was 5. I would love it when my mom would allow me to be present for the maintenance of the organ when it was cleaned, repaired, etc. Though I love my synthesizer and all the various pipe organs it can emulate there is noting like the real thing.

I am also into dream analysis and research, sci-fi, performance artist Leigh Bowery ( http://www.leighbowery.com.br/ )music in general and the study of Castrati.

My first Hobby is to travel. I always wanted to get to a point in my life that I could travel alot. I have happily reached that point the last 3 years. I also collect small ornate boxes, mostly wooden, but some coral and lacquered. They sit all around my house and collect dust (their hobby). I have just bought a 113 year old Victorian House and will be spending the next few years remodeling it. I am afraid this new hobby will turn into a money pit instead.

RE: My other hobbies and interests

I spend a fair amount of time on planes and always have a digital camera in my briefcase. One day, for the hell of it, I decided to take a few pictures from the window of the plane as we were crossing the Rockies. Later, when I looked at the pictures on my computer, I was amazed to find that some of them turned out pretty well: I had assumed that the optical distortion caused by the window would pretty much ruin any photo.

Since then, at the risk of looking like a real tourist to my fellow passengers, I've taken a lot of shots out the windows of planes. I'm not a great photographer, to say the least, and many of the shots are pretty bad. But here and there I find one that I really like. Sometimes it's sun on the clouds, sometimes a shot of the mountains, sometimes something on the ground. Next time you're on a plane, give it a try. You might be pleasantly surprised.

ps: If it's a propjet that you're traveling on, don't shoot through the prop unless you want to have an image of the prop in the shot! :-)

Good for you, KY....better to spend your money on things in your new house, that you might not NOW need or might not NEVER need, but its a much better investment than spending money on escorts that won't EVER be worth the cash outlay. Think Travis. Now go back and sand the bookcases. Work the stairs. Paint the bathroom. Over and over again.

Best of luck in your new house. Please don't invite Travis (or Brian) for the housecoming (Aaah, I meant, warming).

Jeez, what could possibly make you think that an old house might require you to spend money on it? }(

Unless, of course, it's been any one us who owns or has owned an old house spilling the beans between beers in the bar... Just ask EBG (see his post above)!

Old houses are fun, although the phrase "money pit" probably will occur to you from time to time. But, if a house has decent bones and the location is good, it's virtually always a good investment. Not to mention that it's usually very satisfying as a house comes together and you make it your own. Congrats on the purchase, by the way.

Three things:

1) I am a serious and compulsive wine collector. I go to auctions. I have a wine cellar that over the years now contains roughly 5,000 bottles of collectible wines from California, France, Italy, Spain and Australia. Like with sex, I can't get sated with anything about wine -books, magazines, going to vineyards especially during harvest time (the vineyards of Burgundy are my favorite), and, of course, tasting and drinking -- specially with friends of the same interest or with escorts who are curious to this interest.

2) Dining at fine restaurants, bringing my favorite bottles if their wine list is suboptimal. Exploring new good restaurants.

3) Working out to remove excess calories I get from #1 and #2.

Great thread!

I love cooking and entertaining. I subscribe to far too many magazines. I love nothing better than to entertain - whether it be one or eleven friends. Pleasing them with a pleasant gathering is sooooooooooooo satisfying.

I, too, love classical music in general, and the organ in particular. I was fortunate enough to study with a great professor at a wonderful university.

However, business has taken far too much of my time. And now, as I approach fifty, I find that my tastes far exceed my ability in both worlds. I made a mistake not to follow my passion for my hobbies. Nonetheless, I have done pretty well in my other hobby, business.

Now, at this age, though, I suspect I will devote more time to music and food than to business......

OMG! I just adore men with big organs. (cymbal crash) Back in ancient times, I helped restore a Wurlitzer theatre pipe organ for re-installation. At the moment, in the vast collection of antiques, junk and things I could not bear to see demolished over time, I actually own a medium sized Wurlitzer. It is 12 ranks of pipes. Would like to find it a good home.

Your Rodgers is a beautiful instrument. Is the one pictured yours?

WoodNet Forums

KY:

As you work on the new house, you may find yourself in need of a place to ask questions about one thing or another. The WoodNet Forums are pretty friendly and can sometimes be a good source of information that you didn't think you were going to need. :-)
