Frequent hand washing.

If I do get a cold, I use Vicks NyQuil Severe Cold & Flu.

Don't forget to get a pneumonia shot.

This year when I got the flu shot, the pharmacist recommended I get the pneumonia shot as well. I decided to clear it first with my physician who follows vaccines very closely, and he told me that he okays the pneumonia vaccine only for his patients who have serious ailments such as heart conditions, diabetes, etc. On his recommendation I passed on it, but I'm curious to know if any other members have ever gotten a firm yes or no from their physcians regarding the pneumonia shot.

Zman, are you sure it's actually the flu and not just a bad cold? I had the real flu exactly once when I was 25 and thought myself indestructible and it made me realize many people, myself included to that point, have no freaking clue what influenza is. I had never in my life felt so ill I had trouble standing up before. I spent about three days in bed with a raging fever, EVERYTHING hurt - the light from the window hurt my eyes, and I actually thought death would be preferable to living like that. So when people say they get it every year I tend to think they're mistaken. (Or it's possible you had a milder case because of the shot).

I had the same epiphany just last year. I have never been so sick in my life and I completely understood how people can die from the true flu. I think we may have started using the term loosely when people started referring to a bad case of diarrhea as the "stomach flu."

I'm a physician and i recommend the pnemonia vaccine to all my over 55 patients.

And the Shingles vaccine to over 60. some under 60, depending on their state of health and history with chicken pox and shingles itself. insurance probably won't cover at earlier age so we let the patient decide. And document in chart!

I was diagnosed with COPD in September 2015 & instructed by my pulmonologist to get the pneumonia vaccine at that time.

COPD is one of the other conditions the physician I use mentioned as qualifying for his recommending the pneumonia vaccine. He mentioned a few others, but I don't remember which they are. He went on to tell me he is leery about vaccines in general because there are so many variables such as their components and the lengths of time that they are effective. He told me that I should definitely get the flu vaccine every year because of my age (bastard).

You made me laugh, and I share your pain. But, he knows your actual age, it's on his computer screen, it's not as if he is a friend or date underestimating your age to flatter (or the reverse).

Yes, I'm aware of that, I was being facetious. In my conversation with him he asked me my age, and after I told him, he told me that I should definitely get the flu shot every year. He has been my primary care physician for 23 years and I feel blessed for it. :)

You're right. People who say they get it every year are mistaken, and confuse colds with the flu. Colds can leave people pretty miserable. But when you get the flu, you really get the sense your life is in danger, and even getting out of bed to go to the bathroom is a chore. The two illnesses are so different, I'm always amazed at how most people can't separate the two. I think you just need to get the flu once to know: this is not a cold.

I have not suffered from a cold or a flu for about 10 years.

Sure I pick up the bugs, but as soon as I start to feel that sluggish feeling, I reach for my remedy, which is in a pill form, made by a very reputable company, and within 12 hours I am back to normal.

I can certainly recommend the product to anyone - but as I now distribute this product - I'm not going to push it, but welcome questions ...

I wash my hands, drink plenty of fluids and double up on the HOME MADE chicken soup, try to keep up on my sleep and have never gotten the flu. I have gotten the cold a few times but I work in grocery for the day job so I see the ocd clean and the pig pen from Charlie Brown types and everything in between.

Hugs,

Greg

Ps When washing your hands you only need to do it for 15-25 seconds, warm water and soap. Oh and all that antibacterial bull shit isnt allowed in my house. Bring it and you could get shown the door.

I travel with packets of Vionex (only available through EMT suppliers) as it's not only anti-germ but also anti-bacterial and contains lotions so it doesn't tear up your skin if you use it a lot. I don't touch ANYTHING not attached to me in a public restroom and when boarding a plane I'll use a packet to swab down the armrests, tray table, air conditioner duct, etc. I also try to avoid touching my eyes, or nose, or any other part of my face if I haven't just used one of the packets on my hands.

I am sorry, sync, but I have to laugh a bit. And yes, I would recommend the Flu vaccine for us oldsters. But being leery about vaccines in general is just contrary to medical knowledge. As one who sees many, many kids in a pro-vaccine office, I can tell you without a doubt that there is no argument regarding components, there is no argument regarding lengths of time that they are effective (that is why there are boosters throughout life) and, in all honesty, the Flu vaccine is probably one of the least effective vaccines we recommend. We recommend it for the older population solely because getting the Flu in someone with other underlying disease can be deadly and the vaccine is at least giving the chance of protection.

Part of the reason I get the flu vaccine every year is figuring it increases the odds of me developing some cross-strain immunity so when the next mega-killer bug hits, I'm more likely to survive.

Funguy, thank you for your response, and please don't be sorry. Differences of opinions with the debating of facts is a very positive path toward enlightenment. :)

You people using antibacterial bull shit realize that there is good bacteria that is needed in and on your bodies and you are also killing the good stuff too when using that garbage? hence ruining the good stuff for other people. Americans are so fucking annoying with their anit germ shit.

Hugs,

Greg
