Been meaning to take a trip to Europe, but that fucking Euro. SO it's time to revisit Eastern Europe. I've done the biggies, Prague, Warsaw, Krakow, Budapest, and was looking for some suggestions of alternative, easy to semi-ez to reach, destinations.

Someone told me the mountains of Slovenia are beautiful. What towns specifically?

And how easy is it to get down to Dubrovnik (Split, etc) NOT in a boat? Or are those areas best left to my first (first ever) Mediterranean cruise someday?

Where else do you recommend?

THANKS!

I've done those big cities as well.

Next up on my wish list are Sofia, Bulgaria and Bucharest, Romania. From the research I've done, they sound like interesting places.

Sadly, I haven't been to Vienna yet. Oh well.

Good luck and enjoy your trip. I'd be interested in hearing how you fare after you get back.

Dubrovnik has (or at least used to have) international air service. However, I went there, as well as to Split, by bus from Vienna. Both are worth the trip. Ljubljana, the capital of Slovenia, is a beautiful, sophisticated city. Bratislava is an interesting city, at least in the historic core (the Communists butchered the rest), and the mountainous area of eastern Slovakia is impressive, though not that easy to get around. I prefer the Krkonose Mountains northeast of Prague; one can get there by bus, or by train to Trutnov and then bus to Pec pod Snezkou, or one can rent a car and drive there (the roads are better than in much of Eastern Europe). Hradec Kralove in eastern Bohemia has some good architecture. Olomouc in Moravia is a charming city and rarely visited by Americans; Brno is also interesting, and both cities are a lot cheaper than Prague.

Well, no visit to Slovenia would be complete without a trip to Bled, which has a beautiful alpine lake with an island holding a church. There are a number of other pretty villages around Mount Triglav. Bohinj also has a lake, but I haven't been there. Probably not as pretty as Bled (certainly not as famous). If you like caves, Postojna Caves are among the most spectacular in the world (you visit the caves on an underground railway). You can probably find pictures of these places on the internet fairly easily.

Charlie, Many years ago a friend and I went on a ski trip around Slovakia: Stary Smokevc area. Very handsome location.

Unicorn, what was it you were trying to post?

Thanks for all the recommendations, please keep them coming.

First, Rob, it's not the Euro, it's the DOLLAR.

I've enjoyed every Eastern city I've visited. Do realize that most of them have hideous Soviet sections and only the inner core is worthwhile, in too many cases.

No one has mentioned Zagreb, the capital of Croatia. I found it charming.

And, after Paris, I think Prague is the most beautiful city in Europe.

Enjoy the trip. Please let us know how it goes.

I suppose you also might want to consider the Baltics. I spent a day trip in Tallinn, Estonia which has a very pretty medieval core as well as the others mentioned. I hear Latvia and Lithuania are nice too.

I had pictures of Bled and Postojnska Jama. I don't know why the pictures disappeared. They were there a day later. Even the links disappeared. I don't know if someone deleted them.

Having heard a really intersting report about Split and the Dalmation coast yesterday on NPR I have an itch to visit.

They say it is much cheaper than the rest of Europe and has some really beautiful scenery.

So a couple of questions. Is it safe?Is there an artistic scene there? Is there a gay scene there? Is it really that much cheaper?

Thanks for the advice.

It's funny that you're resurrecting this posting now, because I'm headed to Eastern Europe this weekend. From personal experience the prices used to be cheaper ten years ago. Now they're catching up Old Europe's prices. Large cities and touristic places tend to be more expensive than the rest. Don't expect anything huge regarding the gay scene. Prague and Budapest are always good choices for a visit. I haven't been to Dubrovnik yet, but will this summer and I'm looking forward to my trip.

I've lusted and lusted for Chad Hunt for over four years now, but with his going rate of $500 per hour whether it be for an "in" or for an "out" call-- I know I will have to forego that handsome man who possesses a tremendously long and thick log of desire! :9

While we're on the subject again, did RH ever go? A brief trip report, perhaps?

No, I'm still sitting on almost 200K United miles. Gotta get rid of those bad boys. SEAsia mayber, or EE. Or Russia.

Rod,Lufthansa in first to Dubrovnik would be 100,000 UA miles-with a chance to experience the fantastic F terminal in Frankfurt.

Or you could "trade" miles with someone(hmmmmm wonder who bigguy has in mind here ;-) )
