In a landmark decision, Canada's Supreme Court today decided that gay marriage is permissible under our constitution. This paves the way for the federal government to legislate gay marriage for all of Canada, not just the provinces where it is already taking place as a result of court actions at the provincial level.

This is really revolutionary. The Justice Minister has already signalled that the government will proceed with the legislation. Now all I need to do is find a husband who will put up with me!!! :+

Congratulations, Canada! Someday your southern neighbor will catch up to you! South Africa's Supreme Court (as I understand it) also ruled last week that same-sex couples have the right to civil marriage under that country's forward-looking constitution, and civil marriage will also become available soon to same-sex couples in Spain. If this can happen in the country that brought us the Inquisition and Franco, it can happen anywhere!

A glance at http://www.365gay.com shows a number of encouraging developments. A U.S. military court, following the Supreme Court's recent Lawrence decision, overturned the military's ban on opposite-sex consensual sodomy. That puts the military's ban on same-sex consensual sodomy on extremely shaky legal ground! "Don't ask, don't tell" may crumble before our eyes before much longer!

Here in Rio, the state legislature resoundingly defeated a crackpot proposal to finance "ex-gay" recovery programs offered by evangelical churches with state tax funds! The bill had passed all of the committee hearings, but was defeated by a vote of 60 to 8 (or something very close to that)! There were several demos on the steps of the Assembly building in the days leading up to the vote, and a large and noisy gallery at the final vote. The local and national newscasts clearly considered the proposal an aberration, and covered it as such. Brazil may be crazy, but it's MY kind of crazy! Before long (once Spain approves same-sex civil marriage) it's very possible Brazil will do the same thing, becoming the largest country to do so.

Life's never dull, is it? :+

The South Africans, and we hopefully, have Nelson Mandela to thank for their forward-looking constitution. "ALL people will be treated equal" was one of the provisos.

If only some of our leaders could take lessons from this Nobel prize winner..

It's a step in the right direction and is definately good news.

But it still has to pass a parlimentary vote. Some say it's a

no-brainer - but who knows for sure. It's a bit premature to crack open the champagne!
