I've always found art museums a great place for boy watching. Even if you can't tell a de Kooning from a Pollack there's plenty of eye candy at the spectacular new MoMA. Jaw dropping views of the vertigo inducing galleries will make your head spin. I think it was Picasso who said "often the best art in a museum is the view outside the window". The views outside the huge windows of MoMA are pretty amazing but the collection is equally astounding. Looking at the boys looking at the art just adds to the fun. The $20 admission is a little steep so the $75 yearly membership seems a relative bargain. Great membership card with a Warhol of Marilyn Monroe. Nice cafes from the folks who run Union Square Cafe will keep you well fed. Don't let anyone tell you culture can't be fun and sexy. I was excited all day.

Thanks for the thumbs up on MoMA. Could you let your thoughts ramble and let us know what you did and saw, other than cute boys? A nice long narrative would be of great interest to those of us not yet able to get to NYC. Are there many new works on display? What was new for you? Is the sculpture garden done? (I too often sit in a gallery to watch the young guys, often brought by their gf's, as much as to see the Matisses and Rothkos.)

First I was overwhelemed at the vastness of the place, especially the top floor given over to only a few large works that almost seemed lost. I'm sure there are plans to do more with this space. Sorry I didn't take notes on titles and artists. Works I was familar with from over 30 years of going to MoMA came across as if I was seeing them for the first time. Everything looked fresh and new. The galleries were so busy it became more of a people watching experience and getting used to this new space will take some time. For the moment, the architecture became more the focus of the visit. I'll try to be a little more informative art-wise on another future post.

For those interested I would recommend checking out MoMA's web site and also to consider membership even if you're not a native NYer. If you make 4 visits during the year you get your money's worth. It may even be cheaper if you live in another state. I know that's true of the Met.

I would encourage everyone, even those that hate museums to make a visit. It really is fun for boy watching but there's a lot more to the experience. Plus you are only a few blocks from the Gaiety and it would be fun to combine the two in one day. I love being a tourist in my own town!

I went to the new MoMA for the first time last week. I was surprised that the lines to get in are still incredibly long--I waited 40 minutes outside and another ten inside, just to buy a ticket ($20!). It's been so long since I've been there that I really wasn't sure which works were new, although I saw plenty that I remembered from the past. The sculpture garden is finished and open (but it was pretty cold, so I looked through the glass from inside). I also found the galleries on the top floor strangely empty.

I'm not sure why museums seem to draw attractive straight boys--or maybe it's just that the kind of straight boys who go to museums are the type that I find attractive--but I always find myself looking at the museumgoers as much as the art. There aren't many other public venues in which one can slowly walk around looking at other people without drawing attention to oneself.

just watch out for Stendhal Syndrome!!!!!

Be careful at MoMA and any other museum. I also feel I suffered this at the Gay Erotic Expo this year.

---------

Stendhal syndrome or Stendhal's syndrome is a psychosomatic illness that causes rapid heartbeat, dizziness, confusion and even hallucinations when the individual is exposed to an overdose of beautiful art, paintings and artistic masterpieces.

It is named after the famous 19th century French author Stendhal (pseudonym of Marie-Henri Beyle), who gave an early detailed description of experiencing the phenomenon his 1817 visit to Florence, Italy which he published in his book Naples and Florence: A Journey from Milan to Reggio.

Although there are many descriptions of people becoming dizzy and fainting while taking in the art in Florence, especially at the Uffizi, from the early 19th century on, this was not described as a specific syndrome until 1979, when it was written up by Italian psychiatrist Graziella Magherini, who observed and described more than 100 similar cases among tourists and visitors in Florence, the cradle of Renaissance.

There is also a horror film called The Stendhal Syndrome (penned and directed by Dario Argento) in which a policewoman suffering from Stendhal syndrome is trapped by a serial killer in a museum.

RE: just watch out for Stendhal Syndrome!!!!!

In the 19th century, it was considered a sign of a young man's refinement and good taste if he fainted from ecstasy (not the drug) during a performance of Wagner's "Tristan und Isolde" at Bayreuth. The house was prepared to remove several young men at every performance.

Well, I guess I am refined as well as I had the same experience at a Bon Jovi concert.

Springsteen for me!

Was going to check out the new MOMA anyway, but now seems that there's another reason to go!

Tristan und Isolde has driven me to fits of yawning, but never to faint. Damn my refinement!
