The Secret of Our Success

Being that time of the year, magazines are coming out with their end of the year "lists" and today, after lunch, when we stopped into A Different Light, I noticed that Out had Tom Ford on the cover of the "100" gay success stories, while Carson Kressley was overdressed on the cover of Instict as one of their "leading men" of 2004 but I guess we have to wait to December to find out who Genre has selected as the "men we love" for the past year.

I bring this up because I am wondering if anyone else find these particular lists, especially those selected, as annoying and gratuitous as these. While I think there are always some interesting people who might not otherwise come to light, often it is a collection of east and west coasters, people who clearly have a connection (often as advertisers or another business relationship) with the publication or another, equally irrelevant basis which has nothing to do with significant achievement or actual accomplishment, gay-related or otherwise.

They may be gratuitous, but I think it just feeds into the basic human instinct to enjoy lists. Top Ten this, Top Twenty that ... we love to categorize things. Then we can validate our feelings about the pop idols we adore when they make it to the top of the list.

I agree. Silly as they are, the mags wouldn't keep doing them if the issues didn't sell.
