Attendance is high in DC because of Bryce Harper. He's popular, he's fun to watch, and he's a sexy dude.

I want to watch a Twins / Nationals game in person so I can see my team and Bryce Harper at the same time.

Man, he's hot.

It took a while, but I did find average attendance per game information on the Internet.

I clearly did not word the question correctly. I apologize.

Based on average attendance per game at home:

LA Dodgers

St. Louis

San Francisco

Chicago Cubs

NY Yankees

Based on average attendance per game, home and away:

LA Dodgers

St, Louis

Chicago Cubs

"Average attendance" is bogus unless you factor in seating capacity of the stadium and fan excitement. Dodger Stadium is huge (56,000 capacity). Wrigley Field is comparatively small (41,000 capacity only with recent improvements). Wrigley is always full, Dodger Stadium kinda depends on the team's fortunes and even then is only "full" from the 3rd through the 7th innings. They show up late and they leave early. The traffic is a bitch.

That said, I recently bought face-price weekend tickets for a game a Dodger Stadium. Wrigley is sold out so it's scalpers if there's even anything available. But again, that's a measure of stadium size vs. demand.

You make a good point, except for the home and away stats. Would you have expected St. Louis and Toronto to be in the top five, home and away? The Cardinals have a long tradition of drawing fans from all over the mid-west, but the Blue Jays are a surprise to me.

As important, I doubt that the owners of the Cardinals see these numbers as bogus, rather as affirmation that St. Louis may be the best baseball city in the United States, especially without the Rams.

Attendance and tickets sold are two different things. In NYC over the past few days, the Mets and the Yankees were both at home.

Yankees attendence for the two games June 21 22 34760 40104 74864

Mets attendence for the two games June 21 22 40122 35185 75307

Despite the slight advantage in the gate of about 443, the Yankees sold way more tickets, as they have a substantial edge in season ticket holders. So while the Mets may have sold a few more beers and had a few more fannies in the seats, the Yankees made more money.

All of that pales in comparison to the TV income which is substantial. While the Mets have a Network and do very well in the ratings, the Yankees have the one of the best TV deals in baseball. It used to be the best, but the Dodgers recently had a great TV deal signed, so that may be better.

Are you sure the Cubs are always sold out? Or is it just this year? I had no trouble walking up last year to see the Giants play the Cubs on a Sunday. That was the Giants fourth straight loss to the Cubs. Then a short walk to Market Days! I surely would guess the Giants... they're always sold out. I'm surprised the Yankees aren't in the top five away. They are usually a big draw out of town.

You can always walk up to any ballpark on game day and buy an unsold seat. (And if you're willing to pay extra you can get better seats from scalpers.)

Planning a family outing from 1,000 miles away where you need 8 seats together is another proposition entirely.
