The hidden stairways - The Saturn steps, the Vulcan steps, Macondray Lane, the stairways in Telegraph Hill, the Moraga Steps, the Greenwich Steps. Forest Hill and Golden Gate Heights are honeycombed with stairways that run between the streets and avenues. There is an unbelievable panoramic view of the ocean, the Peninsula and the Golden Gate at 10th Ave. and Quintara St. There are websites devoted to the hidden stairways of San Francisco.

I have friends who live on the Vallejo street steps and gardens. Better yet, the Filbert Street steps down to the bay. Best to start at the top and walk down.

Coit Tower for the amazing view

Not to be missed if you visit Coit Tower are the wonderful depression-era WPA murals inside. The Beach Chalet at Ocean Beach also has great WPA murals. And as long as you're at Ocean Beach, you should check out the windmills in Golden Gate Park, which are supposed to be very cruisey after dark.

Also if you're over by Coit Tower, you may see the famous Telegraph Hill parrots -pet birds that have escaped from their owners and gone wild. San Francisco's climate is mild enough so that they thrive here.

And talking about stairs, the Telegraph Hill stairs are just below Coit Tower. They are definitely worth seeing.

And as long as you're in that part of town, you could take a look at the Ghiberti doors at Grace Cathedral. They are replicas of the original "Gates of Paradise" from the Baptistry of Saint John in Florence.

Is the folsom street fair only for people who are part of the leather and BDSM subculture?

It used to be, but it's become mainstream. Early in the day, you see lots of tourists and families from the suburbs taking it all in. The mood changes sometime in mid-afternoon at around 2-3. The dicks start to come out, you see people getting flogged and fucked and peed-on in broad daylight, the suburban families all realize that it's time to get back to the suburbs and the rest of the day is a big party, where pretty much anything goes.

My partner and I went to Dore Alley this year and had a great time. We wore leather, walked around and checked out the men, smoked cigars and just enjoyed the afternoon. We're going to do the same thing at the Folsom Fair.
