Yuck Shia looks bad with a beard and why would anyone be interesting in a movie about McEnroe?

That's a good question.

That's a good question.

Even though I did not particularly like McEnroe, it was a superb contrast of personality and talent. I shall never forget when McEnroe finally defeated Borg at the US Open. But, good luck in recreating that drama in the film.

I've never been a big tennis fan. In fact, McEnroe is one of maybe 3-4 names I would even recognize.

I sat next to Pat Cash's wife on a very long flight to South Africa and she thought it was so funny that I had no idea who he was. We ended up staying in the same hotel and he got a kick out of it too and invited me to lunch with them. His wife was one of the prettiest women I have ever seen - half Irish and half South American country that I can't remember.

I'm the odd person out. Even though McEnroe's temper tantrums annoyed me, I felt he was a real person acting with authenticity, often undermining himself if he was mad at the way he played or at the officiating. He was well known as a perfectionist who would get as angry over bad calls in his favor as the reverse. This contasted favorably for me with Jimmy Connors, who selfishly (and openly) manipulated the crowds to support him.

That said, I thought Borg was the better player and the better person, and would always root for Borg in any head-to-head matchup.

I pretty much judged John McEnroe as a person from his temper outbursts until sometime in the 1980's, when he was offered an unheard of (at that time) $1 million to play tennis in South Africa. He declined in support of the anti-apartheid boycotting of South Africa.

Without going into a long post, McEnroe is a decent TV broadcaster, but not a very nice person. I sat next to the TV booth all day once. Years ago the booth was open so you could hear all the conversations during commercials.

I'm not surprised. That said, while he may be a bastard, he's a principled bastard who fought for better conditions for all players, not just him. He had rivalries, but not, to my recollection, grudges against other players.

I agree that he's a solid commentator, not that I watch or listen much (or at all) anymore.
