David Pocock, former captain of the Australian national rugby team [the Wallabies], gay ally and social activist was suspended for three weeks for a foul hold during a Super Rugby game in Canberra. The usual sportsman's reply is 'it was an accident', 'I'm sorry if I offended anyone' or somesuch.

Imagine everyone's surprise when Pocock made an apology that was, well, an apology, not some mealy-mouthed rationalisation about what had happened. Well, since it was him, no one was all that surprised, but he blogged the apology, tweeted 'I'd like to apologise for what happened in the game on Saturday night. 140 characters is not quite enough:' with a link http://www.davidpocock.com/davidpocock/ to what was in effect a masterclass in how to do it and what to say when you've done something wrong.

The ABC's sports web site deconstructed it and gave some [mainly Australian] examples of apologies that weren't. http://www.abc.net.au/news/2016-04-07/david-pocock-shows-sporting-world-how-to-make-an-apology/7306588
