I probably could become a vegetarian if someone cooked the food for me (in my estimation you have to be a somewhat good and creative cook to get it right). But as many of you know I just don't think I could in all honesty give this up totally:

I could go vegetarian for Indian and Thai food

Yeah, I'm vegan and I hate PETA. They're trash.

PETA is fantastic. I actually don't pay much if any attention to it but saying you "hate" it and "they're trash"? Any organization that advocates for animals beats any others out there (ok, those who help fight cancer -of which I'm a survivor - and those who suffer from it are good as well). Were I King for a day, all hunters and poachers would be skinned alive - pay per view perhaps with proceeds going to animal welfare organizations. Alternatively, people who mistreat animals should have an air conditioner fall on their heads as in this commercial. I'm militant when it comes to mistreatment of any animal. How do I feel about dog meat farms in South Korea - those people should get worse than skinned alive and I volunteer to administer the punishment and end of life. And yes, if I see anyone wearing fur I'm going to somehow find red paint to throw on them. Watch a video on slaughterhouses or how fur is obtained for clothing. Unbelievable to what degree "humans" can be so evil.

I haven't eaten meat in nearly 10 years. There's so much ignorance out there about people needing to eat meat for protein or whatever. Rubbish.

I, too, am against wearing fur. I would support making illegal the practice of making fur coats (especially as it's done now). But, since you approve of battery on people who wear what you believe to be fur coats, I have a couple of questions for you. (1) How do you know what they're wearing is real fur, as opposed to faux fur? (2) Have you considered the fact that if you ruin their coat, they're just going to buy another one, with you thereby having achieved the opposite of what you intended to accomplish?

I'll ask them if they're wearing real fur. If they say "yes", I'll ask them if they can wait about 30 minutes while I go buy red paint. If they say "no", I'll ask them if they want to get a beer at the local bar.

Yes, they're trash because they encourage violent, useless ideologies like:

Were I King for a day, all hunters and poachers would be skinned alive - pay per view perhaps

Additionally, PETA is comfortable using racism and sexism to promote their agenda, and I'm not down with that. I believe in thoughtful, holistic, and intersectional advocacy, not "eye for an eye" or "If you cant' beat em, join em" apporaches. I don't use my animal advocacy as a cover for some hidden loathing for humans. I want peace for all animals, and humans, believe it or not, are animals, too.

Anyway, this whole thread is just meatheads bashing on plant-based folks, and I'd rather not get dragged back into this through a quote. Happy to continue the conversation through PM. Thanks.

I have a slightly different take on furs, although I agree with the `as it's done now` part in relation to the North American and European fashion industries. In this country furs often mean (or meant) fox and rabbit fur, and I have an old rabbit fur floor mat (probably made by my grandfather from rabbits he had trapped). Both these animals are feral pests in Australia and they are shot and otherwise hunted to reduce their numbers. I see nothing wrong when they`ve been shot with using their fur for apparel, any more than it`s a problem to use leather from food animals. Harvesting feral animals for some economic purpose seem like a good idea to me. (Unrelated point, feral goats in marginal arid areas here are mustered for a booming goat meat trade.) I`m sure the zealots in Peta would have issues, but zealotry does that.

Of course your well written and logical arguments (which I’m in total agreement with) will fall on deaf PETA ears.

Of course I agree with MC regarding fur coats from animals which need to be killed anyway, and are killed humanely. One would have to be a lunatic not to agree. I was referring of course to the way in which most fur coats sold in the US are made. My understanding is that the animals are electrocuted while fully conscious. Simply reprehensible in my view. Rabbits are an invasive species down under (damned placentals!), so culling them is necessary to preserve the ecosystem.

I used to be more sympathetic to Greenpeace and PETA than I am now. I can't get worked up about dumping paint on fur coats, but shaming people for eating meat is no better than body-shaming or looks-shaming.

On the other hand, I have no quarrel with pointing out the health and energy consumption advantages of eating vegan or vegetarian. But to hector everyone about meat consumption because it's harder on the environment ignores other factors and denies people personal autonomy and the ability to make their own choices.

those "other factors" can be big ones - the cycle of poverty is powerful, and a huge barrier to food for lots of people - combine that with life in a food desert and/or inadequate knowledge, and good luck trying to tell people to "go vegan"

once again, PETA is just mis-directing resources to make some SJW porn - if they truly cared about people looking towards a more plant-based diet, they'd teach folks what that means, how to find food, how to cook it, etc AND they would do work to increase access to these products by financially supporting communities in need - instead they just fall back on fear tropes about sex

Considering you're bringing memories from down under...

Mulesing (created by John W. H. Mules) is illegal in Spain where Merino sheep come from, yet a normal practice in Australia. Peta even started a campaign shaming Australia for allowing it.

Can you give us some examples of Peta using racism? No sarcasm, I'm just curious about it.
