A question for you NYers: do you know any cheap and reasonably clean motels in Manhattan? I some how remember there was one in midtown, but just can't remember its name now. Any recommendations are appreciated!

JG, are you looking for an overnight stay or do just need a place to crash for the day? If the latter. Check out the day use hotel site. Hotel rates for a 10am- 6pm stay at significantly lower prices. Some are pretty decent hotels.

Depending on day and time of year, the Kimpton hotels can be quite reasonable, especially if you join their rewards club and sign up for e-mails about special deals. All or most of them are in midtown. Then there's Pods 39 and 54 ( on 39th and 54th).

Last time this question was raised, someone mentioned Washington Square Hotel, which isn't in midtown but is very nice-looking for the price. Keep in mind, though, my definition of cheap in Manhattan is under $200 a night.

That's assuming you want or need a hotel for the night. As Truereview says, daytime rates can be less.

The only problem I've found with Pods 39 and 54 is that they have shared bathrooms. If I didn't do mostly outcalls to my hotel room, they would be fine but if my hire and myself want to take our play to the shower or to clean up together, it might be awkward with a shared bathroom.:(

I agree with you. There are rooms that have their own bathrooms, though.

Finding a good price for a 5 to 7 day stay in Midtown/Times Square is a lot of work, much like searching for buried treasure without a map!!! o_O:D:eek:

Hi- yes they have rooms with private baths. Both locations.

I have stayed in both. The smallest rooms are the only ones that share a bath. Full and queen rooms have private.

I have stayed at the Pod 39 in rooms with bathrooms. The rooms are quite nice, if small. It was good upgrade from the many times I have stayed in small rooms without bathrooms in both Pod Hotels! In the prior stays, I spent the maximum time away from the rooms as possible, so the addition money was worth it IMHO.

Well, not to be too picky, but the OP specifically asked for a "motel" in Manhattan not a hotel. I think there is one along 10th avenue.

I noticed that. But I wasn't sure if he really meant that or not.

There was a good hourly hotel near Gramercy Park, which I used a couple of times when I lived in NY and was unable to host my escort. Clean and cheap. I wonder if it still exists....

I went there once 15 years ago, can't remember the name but I doubt it still exists. Liberty Inn is now choice Nr 1 of a VERY restricted selection

Last time I checked, the St Marks hotel (at Astor Place) had hourly rates. The rooms are not exactly 'spotless' but reasonably clean, and have a shower. I paid $6O for 2 hours. It will do in a pinch.

As xafnndapp mentioned, the Liberty Inn is probably a better/cleaner choice.

If you want a bit more luxury, the Hilton Hotel on W 55 and 6th Ave offers 'day' rates. Especially when you walk up to the receptionist and offer to pay cash. Staying within Hilton group, the Millenium downtown, in the financial district, tends to have amazing rates ($2OO/night) on Friday and Saturday nights which are slow nights for them. When I worked in that area, it seemed every Managing Director at Goldman was banging a secretary or a hooker there on Friday afternoon - right before having the face the wife-y and the kids in Connecticut or (gasp) New Jersey over the weekend.

I stayed several times at a nice place on the corner of 10th Avenue and 49th in Hell's Kitchen - named Skyline Hotel. It was fairly close to Mid-Town. It was clean, very reasonable rate, and parking was easy and reasonable. I see it online advertising $113 a night. Rooms were nice sized. See http://www.skylinehotelny.com/ It has been several years since I stayed, so things may have changed. It was busy enough that the Front Desk did not seem to mind "visitors."

Day rate at the Millenium is now $165-185 from 10am to 6pm.....:D Let's celebrate!

By the way, using the hotel tonight App for Jan 22:

  • Homewood Suites- garment district, $90
  • The Gregory -Herald sq, $100
  • Hotel indigo - Chelsea, $79
  • 6 Columbus - Columbus circle $99
  • The Lexington - Midtown East, $90

These rates are comparable to casual meal for two by Manhattan standards.

Ah, the Millennium. Some banks used to put up job candidates there.

Washington Square Hotel is relatively inexpensive, but the beds are uncomfortable.
