I don't demonize Lee, but to say the war was not about slavery is untrue. Some people may have had other reasons for getting involved, but secession had everything to do with the economic blow the diminution and possible eventual outlawing of slavery would be to the South. The economy of the South rested on the backs of people of a different color kidnapped and forced into unwilling immigration to the United States. The ideology of the South rested on the inherent superiority of white masters and the inherent inferiority of black slaves who, if of the right gender, were nevertheless fine breeding mares for white men.

 

If you want your stomach turned, think about the fact that the vast majority of lighter-skinned blacks are products of rape (white man in position of authority having sex with an enslaved black woman) and that our third president was a rapist. Sally Hemings was his slave, never freed by him, and was the daughter of his deceased wife's father, whose slave her mother had been. There is no way in which she can be thought of as freely consenting to sex. She had no choice.

 

The black maid with whom ardent segregationist Strom Thurmond had an out-of-wedlock daughter may also have felt she had no choice, although to his credit, he did provide financial support afterward.

When I see states celebrating Robert E Lee day on the same day as Martin Luther King Jr Day I can't help but think we should have let them secede.
