Thanks James! Very informative indeed. Did you see "Gateway Joe" Friday night on HSN I believe? They were selling a laptop LOADED with so much semi-useless hardware.

RE: Laptops...

VDN I saw one of the presentations. I thought it was a pretty solid buy. Had I not fallen alseep I would have ordered it.

Not sure what you felt was useless hardware. It featured a 60 gig hard drive, 3.0 processor, wireless technology, 15.4 widescreen monitor, full size keyboard and a DVD RW. The later you cannot get from Dell.

Plus it featured Gateway Joe :9

It Depends

Number one, I would strongly recommend that you buy the extended warranty offered by Apple. I almost never buy these things but at the recommendation of the boyfriend of my former roommate in San Francisco, an Apple employee, I did so. In fact, anyone buying a laptop by any manufacturer should likely by an extended warranty for their laptop if it is offered at a reasonable price. I paid somewhere in the neighborhood of $275 for two additional full years, which includes technical support, parts and labor.

Most computer offer just 90 days tech support and one year parts and labor. The techincal support definitely came in handy when I finally bought a printer and needed to get it work with both my desk top and my lap top. I have also had a new modem card installed, a new motherboard, a new power cord as well as a new battary. Including labor and parts, approximately $900, none of which I had to pay for. Most of the work was done at an Apple Store, and I only had to wait for more than four days for one major repair, which had to be done out of state.

Now, to answer your specific question, if you need the high end use you might get with the Power Book, they definitely are beautiful machines. However, if you want to save some money, the IBooks work fine and I think mine was a great investment. I wish I had a DVD burner, but it was not worth the extra money at the time and, when I get a new desktop model (mine is a few years old), it will have that option and, as I said, it is not something I need, just something I would like.

HSN and the Weather Channel now serve as my prescription sleep aides.

MY MISTAKE! I should have typed software. I agree with you in the hardware was great for a laptop. The software, even though they said none of it was trial stuff, included many programs I wouldn't use and uninstall anyway.

So it's not just me thinking his was easy on the eyes? However, why do the on-air Gateway employees get forced to dress like Mormons when they go out door knocking?

VDN I agree about the software package. If I did order it I would have done the same thing. Many silly programs that probably take up way too much space.

I tend to watch QVC and HSN on a regular basis, well at least the electronis and cooking stuff. It's so funny to see them pitch items to the viewers and the calls from the customers put me over in laughter.

So do I! It is some of the best stuff on TV. I LOVE the ladies that call in to give testimonials on like foot cream or something and they begin to cry! I wish my life was that easy where foot cream would make me cry with joy.

AND the poor ladies they use on air to apply make-up on - it all looks so rough and painful!

RE: Laptops...

VDN one of my favorites was on HSN during a cooking show. Shannon was the host and she took a call. The product was a toaster oven and the caller actually said, "theis oven saved my life." And like all good hosts Shannon jumped on it and said did you hear that Mary beth from Ohio had her life saved by this very same toaster oven. If you're not in the ordering process now I suggest you hurry and and do so. LOL LOL LOL I wish I had it on tape.

RE: Laptops...

It is truly amazing how, in this culture, an on-air salesgirl can use fear to provoke people to buy a LIFE SAVING TOASTER OVEN! LOL I also saw a similar testimonial regarding that device where you lie down on it and it turns your body upside down for spine alignment. One call in testimonial giver was in HYSTERICS because it cured many things for her.

These on-air salespeople would be great as politicians and TV evangelists as well!

Gateway has closed all its stores and has plummeted in PC market share. The company seems to be trying to stay afloat by selling plasma TVs etc. I owned a Gateway Performance series for five years and had one piece of hardware after another go. The CRT short circuited one month after the warranty ended. I replaced it with a Samsung. Windows 98 got corrupted and Gateway tech support managed to finish off the computer. I just bought a Dell, though I've heard that tech support (much of it outsourced to India) is awful. Just about everyone I talk with who has owned a Gateway would never buy another. The company may very well go under.
