AirBnb vs hotel

For those of you whove used AirBnb for work whats been the pros and cons vs getting a hotel while traveling for work? I'm debating which to use while in NYC the first part of January. It seems that AirBnb is about the same cost wise as some of the hotels, maybe a smidgen cheaper.

Keep me updated. I looked at Air BnB once and was confused.. What turned me off were all the 'quiet SINGLE bed room'

 

i cant share a bathroom or a kitchen or a house. I am a light sleeper.

 

the one thing i do reccomend is Priceline name your own price. LOW BALL always! and Hotels.com has really improved their shit, I have yet to book there, but hotels.com i go to first to get an idea of all the hotels in a new city.

I usually use PL auction and with the maybe exception of once (we'll see) I've always gotten good quality rooms. I'm an easy traveler, I dont need flash, glam or glitter for a hotel. Clean reasonably quiet and easy to get to and from is what I am lokking. In fact I almoat wish I would get the extended stay hotels when I use the auction side of PL but they are rarely easy to get to unless one has a car.

I saw one place on AirBnb in Brooklyn that I almost went for but it was a bit far and even though the host was hot it wouldnt work for working since he stayed there as well.

Thats what turned me off for Air BnB. hot host = wasted cum, LOL. I'd have to jerk off before bed and ruin my flow.

Pros: Cost is generally cheaper, you can also save money by cooking, and you have more space in which to relax, and more privacy.

 

Cons: More privacy (safety), you are using someone's house, You have a little more responsiblity, and depending on the property checkin/checkout maybe more difficult and strict (then again it can aslo be the opposite and more relaxed. Generally the cheaper locations are not as convenient geographically. sometimes stricter cancellation policies.

 

I love Airbnb the service and company, as a host and traveler.

Brian you can always filter by "Shared Room" "Private Room" "Whole House/Apt."

Technically, it's illegal to rent out an apartment for less than 30 days, unless the owner is present. Two of my friends who have been making their homes available (one in Manhattan, the other in Brooklyn) at Airbnb have been fined. Whether or not they are a minority or the feds are really cracking down on these illegal rentals, I don't know. But I'd still be wary.

 

If the owner is present throughout your visit, i.e. you're only renting a room, you should be in the green.

 

However I doubt that you would like to have someone around while you conduct your business.

 

I'd say just spring for a hotel, maybe one of those extended stay types? You get a kitchen with those.

airbnb always confused me.

 

that said I haven't stayed at a hotel on a vacation lasting more than a few days in a couple years now. I usually do an apartment rental or extended stay apartment. tripadvisor has some great deals and I use homeaway every time I go to Palm Springs. they have one for NYC: http://www.homeaway.com/theme/new-york-city

 

there are a few great international sites too.

 

it's like a hotel except they don't usually have maid service. I reccomend that you ensure there is laundry on premises.

Airbnb is Homeaway, if Homeaway actually kept up with trends and modern technology and wasn't playing catchup. You will probably find most if not all of HA's listing on AB but not vice versa.

Have had good luck with AirB&B. I encourage you to ask questions in the initial inquiry about the place you are interested in: ie. can you have someone over as a guest, can you cook/ use appliances, check in early/ late, put some beer/ wine in the fridge, have pets, and availability of common area spaces from living room to pool or jucuzzi. In my 5 past experiences, sometimes the host was there at check in and then left me the place to myself. All in all, I have found the hosts very accommodating, offering recommendations, and the places have been better than I expected. One point to mention that is although they have clean beds and linens, they may not have full range of bath products available. Also, please, read the fine print on the detailed price. Although the rates can be less or a bargain, many properties also charge a "cleaning fee" which can be $50-75 on top of the rate for your stay.

oh wow russjohnson thanks that is good to know. the Airbnb site always seemed like I was going in circles. homeaway was so much easier to use.

Generally when you do a search, the listing price that comes up includes additional fees spread out over the length of stay.

As an airbnb host (I am in the top ten for popularity in Chciago listings...if you are curious here is a link: https://www.airbnb.com/s?host_id=3230291 ) I would HIGLY recommend that you NOT use an airbnb property for hosting clients or escorts. You have to keep in mind that you are literally renting out a chunk of someone's house...and that person will most likely have very polarized views of escorting and what is happening in their property that a hotel won't care so much about. It also violates the TOS for the service...and they will actually aid police if anything goes wrong in the property with tracking down the person who caused problems. At the very least, be honest and upfront when you book a place with what you are planning on doing. It is within the hosts rights, if they find out that you are violating their rules or the sites rules, to have airbnb rescind you reservation. At that point you are pretty much SOL.

 

Case in point, I had a guest rent the second floor of my place (which is nice and full of really expensive furniture and a fancy Hastens mattress) and try to use it for an adult oriented photo shoot. My neighbor called me up and asked if all was ok...that a large group of very curvy African American women seemed to be coming and going from my front door and were congregated in front smoking. I walked in and nearly lost my mind when I saw what was happening in my home. Airbnb was fast to assist me in cancelling their right to be in my home and to get them out. If I found out an escort was using my home to entertain guests, I would react in much the same way...even though I am about as open minded to escorts as a person can get.

I've used AIRBNB twice to escort; both times it was in San Francisco...and let me tell you...I felt like I was walking on eggshells the entire time. You have the condo/building staff to hide from, you have your neighbors to hide it from...and there literally could be property owners who hide cameras in their apartments(Not kidding here; I know two escorts who have gotten caught using AIRBNB- and they're both intelligent guys). Only way they possibly could have gotten caught in my estimation was either a) too high of volume or simply b) pinhole sized camera; host was peeping on them and then called AIRBNB.

 

Let's say you rented a unit and the unit owner happens to live above you, below you, next to you, etc- expect him to drop by and believe me...it's gonna get noticed. I'd only AIRBNB a high rise with a buzzer box, so that it's impersonal and won't get noticed and bypasses doormen.

 

Try this one on for size- I just got back from San Fran...and while I was there...the unit I was staying in? Apparently it's not legally supposed to be on AIRBNB / certain buildings outlaw it in their leases. This property owner neglected to tell me he was running off the radar screen- I could have gotten THROWN OUT...luckily, when they became aware it was being rented they had noooooo idea what/who it was being rented to, and then I was out of town by day 4- so I was good to go.

 

Also- for an escorts either HOSTING using AIRBNB or RENTING a unit using AIRBNB....make sure there's a separate cellphone number used in your AIRBNB profile vs. your ad- because when checking accounts for AIRBNB they go through your social media and also reverse check phone numbers. Again, know a guy who got jammed.

I just gotta hope it's in a liberal state...down south they make up 'use of an electronic devise while in the commission of a crime' type addendums to the criminal charges, to bump up your bail rates. =(
