The New York Times first reported Rannazzisi's admission earlier this week. Rannazzisi, who is also a star on the FXX show "The League," has said in the past that he was working as an account manager for Merrill Lynch on the 54th floor of one of the World Trade Center towers when it was hit with a plane. He and described the "pandemonium" he witnessed when he ran out into the street.

In an interview with comedian Marc Maron, Rannazzisi also said six of the 10 members on a basketball team he played on died.

This week, Rannazzisi said on Twitter he was in fact working in another part of the city, and not at the World Trade Center.

Comedian and star of "The League" Steve Rannazzisi, who has often told the story of how he escaped from the World Trade Center on 9/11, now says he was not in the Twin Towers when the terrorist attacks happened and has apologized for his claims.

"As a young man, I made a mistake that I deeply regret and for which apologies may still not be enough," he said, beginning a series of tweets.

"After I moved with my wife to Los Angeles from New York City in 2001 shortly after 9/11, I told people that I was in one of the World Trade Center towers on 9/11. It wasn't true. I was in Manhattan but working in a building in midtown and I was not at the Trade Center on that day," he continued.

It has taken him more than 14 years go correct this lie. Not sure why this was an issue that caught the attention of the NY Times, but the lie itself was horrible and the propagation of the lie even more so.

I wonder if he planned to make this up, or if it was one of those really stupid momentary lapses that went "viral", taking on a life of its own once it left his mouth. I have told some things that weren't true in my long life, and then wondered what I was thinking 2 minutes later. We will never know, but there are people who know him who will. If he planned it, this won't be the only time he has or will lie. Or maybe he will learn from this experience.

ALL actors embellish, but this isn't getting caught when you really didn't graduate 2nd in your class or wash dishes to pay for acting class or sleep in your car on Hollywood Blvd when you arrived broke, THIS I'm not sure he can come back from. It's like lying about losing your family in The Holocaust. No excuse or apology will hack it. (then you have ppl like Seth MacFarland who was booked on and ran ticket in hand at Logan to have the door closed in his face and missed the first hijacked flight by a hair, and many ppl still don't know about it)

I think we made it up just to promote himself, very sad. Brian Williams at least was on a helicopter next to another aircraft that was hit by enemy fire, this guy just made up the whole story.

He may be someone who felt immense sorrow for a truly hideous lie he told and decided after many years to clear his chest. No lie is unforgivable if the request for forgiveness is sincere. Or this may be an attempt by a psychopath who does not feel bad about any of his reprehensible behavior in order to avoid job loss or humiliation on the job. We really won't ever know.
