That will set you back a bit more than $5k I think, even used. A quick google search showed 3 examples

ranging from $13K to $53.5 K.

About $40K I think. That's what I meant - I have champagne taste and beer money. I don't want anything that costs just $5K. Although $5K would buy a pretty nice trip to New York, another thing that, now that I think about it, I have been wanting.

:D I thought even that amount would be controversial since it would be given directly to a person, which may help sink someone deeper into an addiction. Nevertheless, I regularly give to street performers and various people asking for money. I give significantly more--though not huge amounts--to actual charities.

I agree that it's a bad idea to give to the "homeless" person begging at the freeway on-ramp (he may not be as homeless as you might think). A street performer is a different story. But I do give generously to charities designed to help the poor or homeless. There are local food banks which get my $$, Meals on Wheels programs (if you're thinking locally), as well as programs like Feeding America if you're thinking nationally, and countless of international programs such as CARE or Child Aid if you're thinking internationally. If you want to help out homelessness in particular, check these out:

As for how I'd spend the money, a new financial advisor I met a couple of years ago told me after evaluating my finances "Unicorn, I can see you're a man who prefers to spend his money on nice trips than on fancy cars or clothes to impress others." I would therefore not spend the $5000 on a suit like some would, but rather on a mini suite in a nice cruise ship. For $500, a romantic week-end at the Clement in Monterey with my beau. $50 might get me a new pair of pants. What can one get for $5 these days, other than a cafe late with two pumps of sugar-free vanilla? Yeah, and 5% goes to charities. Organized ones, preferably with a 4* rating by Charity Navigator (although I do give to some 3*'s that have causes which I strongly support and aren't being done by other groups, such as the Nature Conservancy).
