For the last few years I've noticed more gay men with tattoos - if fact - some heavy tattooed more and more. I wonder why that is...maybe gay porn influences?

Look at the world around you. There are heavily-tattooed people everywhere. Why are there heavily-tattooed people everywhere? Because they're drawn to it and it no longer carries the stigma that it used to.

I know of more than a few dotcom millionaires that have full-sleeve tattoos on both arms. I'm tattooed and the people in my BNI group just think it's a little interesting, nothing more than that.

Everybody that I know looks at my tattoos and says that they would love a tattoo but.... "I'm afraid it will hurt," "It's forever," "I don't know what I want," "My employer wouldn't like it," etc.

I agree, tattoos aren't for everybody.

I don't see it as a gay phenomenon, in prisons, gangs, rap music, tattoos are both identifiers of members and expressions of accomplishments. It's a reality TV show sparked growth industry. It's an artistic expression of personality and/or a 'monkey see, monkey do' situation.

And as Major Charles Emerson Winchester said on M*A*S*H, "Tattoos are the common man's way of investing in art.”

In the 50's and 60's it was mostly individuals we called "hoods" who were kind a the mean, bad guys who had tattoos, though it seems sailors had somewhat of a reputation for sporting tattoos, too. I guess there was something macho about having them. Today it seems almost everyone is into them. Visually speaking, some people have have some pretty amazing works of art on their bodies. However, I hate it when people with beautiful, muscular physiques cover the those sexy muscles with tattoos. Why do they want to cover up this physique they worked so hard to create? To me the tattoos take away from the muscle definition. Of course, maybe they look at it like the tattoos are enhancing their physiques. The clean, smooth muscular body is much more attractive and impressive to me. To each his own.

I like both looks. I well-built guy covered with tattoos give me an instant boner. But then again, so does a well-built guy who doesn't have any tattoos.

I had a boyfriend once with over 100 hours of ink and every time he got naked I was compelled to bone him. If they are tasteful why not get one? I am thinking of starting a sleeve myself

That's what they do to me, too.

They can go really wrong. I see a guy at the gym with small individual pieces randomly scattered all over both legs. The effect reminds me of a little boy's pajama pants. When I see him, I always think, "What were you thinking?"

You'd look great with a sleeve. Do it.

I'm with some of the other people, I don't think it's specifically influenced by the gay porn industry, but more so that people are becoming more comfortable with body art as a form of self expression. The people who I feel for are those that get a specific tattoo without any thought as to why they want it. I think that for some men, it accentuates and adds to their sexual persona and in other cases it leaves me with the "what were they thinking" face.

Just examples as they pop in my mind:

  • Harry Styles - Tattoo train wreck
  • Justin Bieber - Not as bad as Styles, but still a disorganized landscape of...stuff.
  • "The Rock" - Cool and bad ass tattoo
  • Killian James - Tasteful tribal and oh so hot

I'm of the no tattoo group. I've never had a tattoo make me boinnng. In fact tattoos can be a boinnng killer for me. Maybe I'd like them better if more guys had tiny unobtrusive pictures of something cute like Hot Stuff or teddy bears on a butt cheek (a hidden surprise as it were). But I think most tattoos are really ugly. And if they are supposed to be signs of individuality, why does every guy and his dog have the same tribal band on his arm?

Call me crazy- but I'd especially prefer any doctor or lawyer I see not to have a visible sleeve tattoo. I'm not saying they wouldn't be good at their job. But I might have to question their judgement seeing that they are in a very public position.

Hypothetically if I had my choice between two hot escorts who were both into my very vanilla tastes where one was tattooed and the other wasn't, I'd choose the non tattooed guy every time. And I might even choose the non tattooed escort even if the tattooed guy was slightly more my type.

And I'm an equal sex tattoo hater. I think they look even worse on women. If I were straight (notice my use of the subjunctive mood indicating impossibility or a wish contrary to fact), I'd prefer any girlfriends of mine to be ink-less too.

I'm also a member of the no earring, no jewelry, and no body piercings group. We're a fun group. We meet on Thursday evenings at Baskin Robbins. Try to arrive before the Introductory Prayer. Y'all come.

You know, I was going to mention it but I wasn't sure if it was appropriate, but I do agree that people are judged in some professions for visible body art and it could adversely affect their careers. In particular I'd say people in Healthcare, Law and perhaps Banking/Finance. I'm not sure why? Is it because people with visible body art are viewed as "free spirited" and not "serious"? Is it because some people view it as an "over expression" of individualism? Not sure, really.

Billy Brandt, circa 2000. When he was with Falcon, I do not remember the studio releasing any porn video that showed Billy's tatoos. The tatoos above were just the beginning, and not well thought out, in my opinion.

Extremely nice guy though.

Me too! Ear gauges are the worst.

Really? The "smaller" ones look really hot on some guys in my opinion. :) So interesting to read what people's tastes are.....

I ran into a guy at folsom a few years ago with a tattoo around his butthole and I just about lost it and at his ass out on the street right then and there.

I will have to disagree. On the other hand with so many people having them, I'm glad they are making you happy.

Can somebody wake me when the nightmare is over?

Maybe for you, Steven it'll be a beautiful nightmare to remember. :). It's how you make it to be. ;)

There's an escort- probably more than one that has a tattoo outlining his belly button-not really my cup of tea. Also I prefer kissing guys without tongue piercings.

Nowadays, gays look like everyone else, which means that if they are young (or want to appear young) they may very well have tattoos. I watch a lot of professional tennis, and I have noticed that many of of the younger men and women players have tattoos on arms, legs, hands and breasts, sometimes even on backs and other awkward places (Dustin Brown lifts his shirt to show off a large portrait of his father on his left side). Many of the tattoos are unattractive, poorly placed, and even look like something homemade in prison. I understand the impulse of an insecure person to mark him or herself to identify with a particular group, or to draw attention away from an unattractive body, but why would an attractive young woman, a professional athlete with a successful career and lots of money, have a childishly drawn tat on the side of her neck? I am always surprised that someone who depends on his or her arms, hands, ankles and legs to play would take the risk of letting someone use needles to decorate them.

I do sound like a curmudgeon, don't I?

Although to be fair, at least a tattoo like this makes a whole lot of sense.

Quite a statement to say about yourself to say "stupid" on your forehead. Wonder if there's a "whore" tattoo around? Any ideas, babe?
