The dreamers is one of the most beautifully filmed movies I have ever seen. Set to the music of 1968, it tells the tale of youth in their constant search for self. The story so intriguing, and, it so highly erotic, captivated me from the beginning. Each frame seems lovingly crafted. If I had to edit the movie, I would take out the part where Michael Pitt has his head buried in the female's vagina, but otherwise, this movie is highly recommended.;)

I was NOT lucky enough to get tickets for this show at the Sundance Film Festival last month. But, I had several friends who did see it. They raved about the movie and I hope it returns to this area.

Anyone know if there are plans for offering this on DVD?

I plan to see "The Dreamers" this weekend as well as go back and see "Latter Days" again. "Latter Days" is one of the best gay flicks

in a while, especially because of hot Steve Sandvoss as the Mormon

who discovers that he's gay. Oh, yeah -- Sandvoss is good actor as well. I am surprised that "Latter Days" has not been discussed here.

Don't want to hijack this thread but I would LOVE to see "Latter Days". Unfortunately, all shows in Utah have been cancelled. The theater claimed it was a poor quality film that didn't meet their standards. Even the local "art" theater (which routinely shows movies with questionable quality) stated it didn't meet their standards either. x(

But, at least it's not censorship or the heavy-handed influence of the Mormon Church. I feel so much better knowing that the theater owners are "saving" me from such a poor quality movie. ;-)

I read an article in the Times bout the movie and they chose to leave out the homosexual relationship between the guy and the girls brother (that was "consumated" in the book).

Bertolucci chose to only hint at it... for the movie (darn!) :-)

RE: Movie: Latters

I saw this movie today and am curious what others think, because the merits of the movie seemed to have escaped me. Yes, the two leads are impossibly hot, but does that still make a gay movie admirable? I thought Latters was hokey, manipulative, badly written and badly acted. A totally predictable and lame story! I was as annoyed by this movie as I was captivated by The Dreamers...

Lucky,

THANK YOU for your comments on "Latter Days". That kind of confirms what the theater owners in Utah said. Makes me feel better about not having the chance to see the movie.

I'm keeping my eyes open for "The Dreamers". That one I'd really like to see.

I loved The Dreamers; it's the best movie I've seen in some time.

I'm not pissed off at Bertolucci if he left out gay action

that was in the book. This is his film; it isn't the book.

This movie is by turns romantic, tragic, funny, and horrific--and

does not have a tidy or happy ending--yet I found it uplifting.

I am in awe of the craft of this film.

I think it's great that Bertolucci didn't cave in to requests

by the distributor to cut or alter it for the USA so it could

get an R rating instead.

I'm looking forward to seeing Dreamers tomorrow. Your post makes my anticipation even more urgent.

I rented Party Monsters last night. Interesting film ... though I thought the acting was a bit over the top. While I like Mac in his role I felt Seth Green was out of place in the movie.

RE: Movie: Latters

Lucky, We usually agree on plays and movies, so I am surprised by your reaction to "Latter Days." Given the strong reaction against the movie by Mormons (see "Latter Days" discussion forum on the movies' website), the movie has captured the dilemna faced by gay Mormons.

I do agree that the script plays out like a romance novel. But, the subject matter and the acting of the two leads, especially Steve Sandvoss more tham made up for that for me. It also helped that Sandvoss is, in my opinion, the hotest actor in a gay film in a long time. The nude love scenes also helped. I will check out the Bertolucci film this afternoon.

I guess we're sort of mixing our films here in this thread. I am planning to see The Dreamers soon even though it's gotten pretty mixed reviews. It's kind of nice that Fox Searchlight went ahead and released it as NC17, altho I'm sure that probably helps their marketing.

As for Latter Days, I thought it was a very good film. I liked the acting and I liked the twist in the middle where it changes from light-hearted romantic comedy to a pretty heavy film. And both the leads are so fucking hot that makes it pretty much worth seeing for that reason alone. Don't believe those Utah theater owners; they're just caving in to the pressure from the Mormon church. It has won audience awards at several major gay film festivals including ours here in DC. The writer/director, producer and Steve Sandvoss attended the screening (it was closing night) and took questions. It obviously had a much deeper effect on the gay Mormons in the audience than it did on me for example. The producer was hoping they would get banned at least in parts of Utah in order to generate some pub but I don't think they were expecting to be banned in the whole state. This was apparently Steve's first film role. He may be a pretty good actor, but the poor guy wasn't especially articulate answering questions. The production company is trying to make one gay film a year for the next several years and I guess this was the first one. TLA is the distributor, so it will show up on DVD in the not too distant future I would expect.

>I don't understand why Dreamer's is of interest to people

>here. Isn't it mostly a het love story?

The Dreamers is so unlike most love story movies I've seen that

I personally wouldn't use the term "love story" in describing it.

I won't go into detail about what makes it different because I

don't want to spoil anything for those who haven't seen it yet.

I find most love stories boring (boring when they're the main

point of the film, and also boring when they're just one element

of the movie). But I found nothing boring about The Dreamers.

But about love stories in general--

I can certainly understand why a gay man might choose not to

go see a movie about hetero love, but that doesn't mean all

gay men wouldn't like it. It's not like people can only

appreciate movies about their own kind.

>It's not like people can only appreciate movies

Of course, that's a good point, and I agree completely.

However, let me clarify my point.

I think Lost in Translation is a great movie even though it is completely hetero, and Under the Tuscan Sun, another hetero movie (though not nearly as good), was charming and a lot of fun.

It just seems based on the promos that The Dreamers, in contrast to the two movies I just mentioned, is a very sexually focused heterosexual story, and therefore (I would think) of somewhat less interest to the gay community in general.

NN excellent point. It would be like saying white people wouldn't go see a film like Soul Kitchen which celebrates a black family because we aren't black. All movies are a great way to learn about culture, experiences or just for general entertainment.

Hey I even liked You've Got Mail and I don't think you could have been further from gay there :)

Hoover, honey! This film is a work of art. Should we deny ourselves the appreciation here because the characters are hetero? Do you not like beautiful images? Intriguing (and intelligent)stories? The mixture of music and action? A look at the Sixties from a different point of view? Could not a gay person enjoy the eroticism of a hetero male? And, despite leaving out any direct homo relationship, there is still an exciting undercurrent to having one male perform sex acts in front of another. So, stick with crap like the Latter Days if you need "gay" entertainment with delectable actors getting naked a lot. But for art, you might have to see some heteros!

Oh, Lucky, thanks for being so patient with me. I just have my own issues with films of this sort.

I think I've suffered from one too many unrequited crushes on cute straight guys to be able to easily sit through a film featuring yet another unobtainable guy getting off without my help.

I wanted to love "The Dreamers" very much, but came away somewhat disappointed. For three young people who are so passionate about movies there were no real substantive discussions, beyond "Chaplin is better than Keaton" with the respond "No, Keaton is much better."

The movie is beautifully filmed and the sexual and personal interaction among the three 20 year olds is continually interesting. I like the knowing Theo more than the searching young American played by Michael Pitt. As noted in one review, Pitt's character seemed to have stepped fully formed out of a Henry James novel.

With political turmoil swirling all around them in the Spring of 1968,

the three seem content to hang out together away from the world in an endlessly interesting old French apartment. But, I wanted to know more about the political happenings in the street. For me, the movie

only came completely alive when the political events suddenly bring a shocking end to life in the apartment. Theo finally takes action and, by doin so, ends his relationship with Pitt and perhaps brings his relationship with his sister to another level.

"The Dreamers" is never less than interesting, but until the last fifteen minutes I was seldon totally involved in the story. There are some wondeful moments: Theo searching for food on the street after the three temporarily run out of money. His twin sister, Eve, chaining herself to the gates of the Cinematheque Francaise is another example. It is lovely to find Bertolucci back in something approaching top form.

Few good new movies are released in January and February; we are lucky to have both "The Dreamers" and "Latter Days."

I saw THE DREAMERS today.I wanted to like this movie-I ended up felling gypped.

I thought Bertolucci's portryal of the Girl was really mysoginistic.kinda like"see I told you girls are lying ,controlling and dirty"and while it wasn't horrid enough to make me flee screaming from the theatre when he smears the girls blood on her face after taking her virginity-I really am glad I had lunch AFTER seeing the film. All in all,I did not like this film very much.

RE: Movie: Latters

THERE IS A GOD!!! Latter Days is coming to Salt Lake City the end of March. The Tower, the local arts theatre, has finally agreed to show the movie.

At first they said it didn't measure up to their quality standards. But they've now decided they were wrong and will show the movie.

Maybe the owner read the positive reviews on this website and reconsidered their position. :+

Latters Days and the DVD Maurice

Glad to hear the movie will play Salt Lake. The discussion Board for "Latter Days" is full of pro and con comments from Mormons, so it's good that the folks in Utah can see the movie for themselves.

It would be cool if the comments on this site had an influence. All the reviews have been decent except for New York magazine.

Just watched "Maurice" on DVD. Is there a better scene in any gay film than the last scene between Maurice and Scudder? Rupert Graves

is just wonderful in the film.
