Just curious about Martin Luther King celebrations in your area. Although it is finally a state-recognized holiday where I'm located, my company considered it a normal work day.

Our state legislature met for their opening session. Apparently they didn't feel the need to celebrate a great leader. x(

A couple local black leaders were interviewed for the media (radio, TV, and newspaper). But, other than that, it was almost a non-holiday.

Is this unique to my area or is apathy for this holiday seen in other areas?

There was a noticeable increase in business where I work... obviously alot of people had the day off. PBS radio was running alot of interviews/essays/etc. about MLK. School was out.

Otherwise, I didn't hear of any celebrations, or rallies of any sort.

I suppose that the point of a great man's life is that when he dies, he'll have a holiday in his name, and government and bank employees will get to sleep in, in his honor.

Denver likes nothing more then a parade.. there is one for every holiday.. and today was no exception.. Everyone I know was off work/school too.

Forgive the impertinence of my curiosity, but just what line of work is a fabulous girl like yourself in?

>The Gaiety was crowded but that probably doesn't count.

Well, I'm sure if there was an a man of African descent dancing he was dancing last. If I were looking to celebrate Dr. King's life it wouldn't be at the Gaiety.

And why would you? How many other holidays do we look to celebrate at the Gaiety? None, I submit.

The question of equal opportunity, however, does need to be addressed, not just by Denise, but by the audience. There are no Asian dancers at the G, and very few gay ones! Is it because the audience demands virile straight guys or hung Latinos? Well, sometimes. But I sure enjoy Asians and would appreciate hot black guys too.

I AGREE AND LET'S STAGE A FUCKING PROTEST

I am serious. I want some FUCKING hot African and Jamaican men and Asians on that damn stage!

I am sorry for the vulgarity. I just snapped. Lucky is right. Wonder Bread is nice BUT THAT IS ALL WE ARE FED FROM DENISE. More color! More diversity!

I thought it was a federal holiday and states didn't have such a choice!?!

In my area we actually had a parade and there will be a big celebration tonight at the high school with choral groups, readings, essay contest winners and the such.

I also had a very interesting conversation today at work about the word "nigga". IMO, I feel no one, black or white, should use this word in any manner. It is a word with a history of hate, oppression and death. "Nigga" is now used as a familiar greeting between two or more black males. "What's up my nigga" or "Damn nigga, look at the ass on that biatch". After we talked we had a marvelous lunch.

It is a federal holiday, which is not the same as a national holiday. As a federal holiday, US government workers have the day off, but that doesn't apply to other workers. If a state declares it a holiday, then it is a day off for state government workers. Lots of private companies do not honor federal/state holidays just the national holidays: New Years, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day and Thanksgiving.

Thanks for this thread, Onefinger. I'd thought about posting a similar one but had second thoughts!

For the eighteenth year, there was a commemorative march held in Seaside, CA followed by a program at its civic center. The march had approximately 500 folks of varying ethnic and racial groups; the program was attended by almost 700+ folks. In the past I've been amongst the marchers; this year I decided to attend the program.

There was a symbolic march in Los Angeles and a freedom train ride from San Jose, CA to San Francisco where there was a huge program in its civic center.

PPS showed CITIZEN KING last eve, a rather provocative program which should have been viewed by all. Because of its astuteness-- I'll probably purchase the video some day soon!

Again- thanks much for the thread! AXiom

On the local news they did cover the MLK celebrations in other areas. I believe it was Denver where they showed pictures of something I think they called a "Marade". They said it was a combination parade and march. I thought that was a great idea.

The celebrations in California sounded wonderful. I especially liked the idea of the freedom train.

When I lived in Detroit, MLK was a significant holiday. Still can't get used to the lack of celebration in Hatu (the backard state). ;(

RE: MLK Celebrations

Well I've made my opinion known regarding more variety in the colors and nationalities of the dancers and it's gotten me only grunts of disgust in return. Perhaps a friendly but persistent onslaught of opinions to Denise would warrant more attention.
