After the controversial circus surrounding Giuliana Rancic and Fashion Police, Kathy Griffin decided to step away from the E! show, just seven episodes after after stepping into Joan Rivers's stiletto heels on the show. Griffin may be one for inciting controversy for the sake of a cackle, but that doesn't mean she stands for a show that rides on putting down others.

"I thought I could bring my brand of humor to Fashion Police so that beautiful people in beautiful dresses could be teased when appropriate," she wrote in a lengthy statement on Twitter. "My brand of humor, while unrepentent and unafraid, is all about CONTEXT ... I do not want to use my comedy to contribute to a culture of unattainable perfectionism and intolerance towards difference."

Kathy Griffin has thrown in the towel, quitting "Fashion Police" because she thinks it's too mean-spirited.

Griffin just tweeted a treatise, saying, "I thought I could bring my brand of humor to Fashion Police so that beautiful people in beautiful dresses could be teased when appropriate." Griffin adds, "My brand of humor, while unrepentant and unafraid, is all about CONTEXT. There's plenty to make fun of in pop culture without bringing people's bodies into it."

Griffin was not specific on what changed her tune, but she did say, "I do not want to use my comedy to contribute to a culture of unattainable perfectionism and intolerance towards difference."

She never mentioned the whole thing with Zendaya at the Oscars, but she did mention in her tweet being a champion of people of color.

Kelly Osbourne, who recently departed from the show herself, tweeted her support of Kathy's decision, saying. "I could not be more proud of you @kathygriffin you have my love and support always!"

After watching the first two episodes with Kathy G. as the host(ess) I gave up and lamented once more the passing of Joan Rivers. Kathy Griffin is no fool and she was wise enough to abandon a sinking ship with her skin intact. I'll miss the show and hope Melissa Rivers doesn't try to keep it going.

While I think the show was okay with Kathy and Brad replacing Joan and George, I didn't think that the gig seemed like a good fit for Kathy. If anything, she seemed more timid on Fashion Police than she normally is -- like she was afraid of offending people. I was surprised by this given her stand-up, her reality show, and the way she spoke on her own short-lived talk show. Brad, on the other hand, has been a pleasant surprised. I still think George is a lot sexier, but Brad is a lot funnier.

JOAN was old show-biz royalty with tenure, she could say the most horrible things and get away with it and you laugh. It's like Don Rickles who's like 100 telling someone to shut-up and get lost. It's WAY harder for a Kathy or ANYONE younger to fill that slot and not be branded a bitch. (or more of one than ppl say they are already) What they need in Joan's chair is a Dame Edna or something.

I can understand what Kathy Griffin meant. The show focused on people's outfits and bodies, and was full of conversational pile-ons. I could see how difficult it would be to provide some balance. As I watched Kathy Griffin's stand-up I was always impressed with the many ways she approached the same pop-culture target. Her Celine Dion routine is a classic example; She skewered Celine very deeply, but she balanced it by recounting the grace with which Celine indulged and humored Kathy's direct access to her hospitality, and with Kathy's own dorky and sometimes foolish interactions in Celine's presence. Watch a few of these thoughtfully scripted routines and you can understand what she meant by "My brand of humor, while unrepentant and unafraid, is all about CONTEXT..."

Thanks for recommending that, N2N. I just watched the routine you're talking about. While the part you are referring to was less funny than some of her other material, the balance me you feel better about having laughed at the earlier insults. Kathy was even gracious enough to let Celine have the final punch line.
