I've lived in the desert for a few years now. I love the relaxed and laid back atmosphere here and most important NO TRAFFIC. It's a dramatic change for me coming from a big metropolitan city. It's very gay-friendly and slowly becoming the gay mecca of the west. There are a number of good Thai, Japanese, Chinese, French, Greek, Vietnamese, and Italian restaurants in the area. Our gay social group have a lunch meeting at different ethnic restaurants at least once a month. There are also several Vegas style casinos, if you like to gamble. <eg>

If you have any other questions, e-mail me and maybe I can answer some of them before you make your decision.

If you're thinking of owning a home, I suggest you look around in the neighboring towns of Palm Desert, Indio or La Quinta. They're only a few minutes drive from Palm Springs from I-10. It's more reasonably priced there and those towns are booming.

I have to apologize for not responding to all these posts--I have been in Palm Springs for the past week and haven't been near a computer. I bought a home there over the weekend, and am looking forward to moving soon.

For those who wondered why I am moving there, I can only say that there is something about the desert that I find very emotionally satisfying. I love the air, the scenery and the climate. When I was younger, I probably would have found it too slow and monotonous--anyplace less stimulating that New York made me restless. When I decided I was ready to give up sex, drugs and rock 'n 'roll (OK, that is strictly metaphorical--I'm only ready to give up the r 'n' r completely), I knew the desert was where I wanted to live, and Palm Springs was my favorite place in the desert. I find it very relaxed and friendly, and although I have always opposed ghettoizing gay life, I really enjoy living in a place where everyone understands I am gay and it's nothing to hide or justify, because at least a third of the local population is gay, and gays control the town politically.

I also chose Palm Springs rather than one of the other towns in the valley for a rather practical reason: it's actually easier to find a nice house in a nice middle class neighborhood for a price I can afford than in Palm Desert, Rancho Mirage, or Indian Wells.

In my age bracket, drinking has always been a ubiquitous activity, whether in NYC, Phila., Boston, DC, London, Berlin, Amsterdam or any of the other cities in which I have spent most of my adult gay life. The people I have met so far in Palm Springs don't seem to be any more inclined to indulge than anyone else, although I am sure I could find those circles if I looked for them, which I won't.

Finally, I am happy to hear that there are more good restaurants than I initially expected, and every meal I had during the past week, even in cheaper restaurants, was good, and less expensive than I am used to on the East Coast.

So, thanks once again to all of you for your input, and I hope to become a good Californian.
