On the night stand of an escort I recently visited: a prominent display of various lubes, an array of condoms and a tube of Lidocaine. I was a bit embarrassed to ask him what he used it for. It appears to be a local anesthetic that can be used to numb pain. Could it be that he numbs his (or his client's) anus with it? Is this common?

Generally if you want to good light numbing agent clove oil does wonders and you just mix it in your lube. It can make a bottoming experience go from mediocre to phenomenal.

But does it numb the "good" feelings around the anal opening?

Also, lidocaine cream and gel is used for numbing the skin for a lot of "local" procedures but you have to be very careful of its absorption and effects on the heart. I've also heard of guys using it on their dick to make less sensitive - also not a great idea.

Numbing agents can be used typically for anal or oral use to reduce pain/suppress the gag reflex. However, I am strongly against recommending them for either use. Anal sex should not be painful and pain is a signal from your body that something is not right. You can potentially suffer serious injury and not know it because you don't sense the pain.

Agree 100%. Pain is there for a reason. If there is pain, an adjustment needs to be done. If you ignore or don't feel the pain opportunities for injury grow exponentially.

In other words, if you can't put two fists in your un-anesthezised asshole just yet... don't. Train, be patient and soon enough you will be able to. And you will get to keep your asshole in the long run. =)

When this was developed, in was marketed for men for PE, to desensitize the glans. There is also a spray. Both gels and spray actually contain both Lidocaine and Prilocaine. I actually used the gel a few times in my other life, just to prolong things. It wasn't big hit with me, and actually forgot about it until now. I just tried to find out if there were any cardiac sequelae to either user or partner, and could not find any. Only caution is allergies to either. Little chance of "desensitizing" the partner. When we give cardiac patients Lidocaine, it is to control arrhythmias, and in larger does and IV.

I used to use it in a combo topical cream on certain patients having laser procedures but after one patient had an irregular heart beat reaction I decided to switch to another topical. It is known to exacerbate arrhythmias (irregular heart beats), bradycardia (slow beats), and cause heart block. Mostly in the elderly (or shall we say, older folks) or those already known to have heart problems.

Plus, the anus/rectum, like any area of mucus membranes, is a location of great absorptive capability.

Hi FG, And I am sure if i went to the companies prescribing info, I would find these cautions. I am not sure concentrations in gels and sprays. Will have to check that out. Of course the elderly (lets try and define age???), + anyone with of course a cardiac history. I have a well hidden WPW, in my cardiac circuit, discovered while undergoing an ablation for SVT. I would use the product today. That's my choice. Everyone needs to do their research and make there choices.

a good app for you would be "epocrates" - essentially a free PDR on your phone! Actual mobile PDR is coming out in April.

I use it all the time - it's faster than ever trying to look something up in the PDR or even on line.

When I mix up a batch of J Lube I will add about 15 drops of clove oil. Also lubes like Slam Dunk have a bit of clove oil in them but aren't condom compatible, they are generally used for butt play (fingers or more). A light numbing is fine if your top knows what they are doing and can read your muscles. It feels like a pleasant tingling. Products like anal ez should be avoided because they will numb your butt to the point of not feeling anything which can get you into trouble.

ChrisW: With all those cloves, I can smell the Easter ham cooking already.

Oh you medical guys with your snappy clove oil/lidocaine repartee!!!

LOL!

Well thank you all for sharing your insights. I had no idea what Lidocaine was. Pardon me for being naïve, but would you say the most common use would be to apply the lidocaine to the anal area (1) before the fucking, to numb the initial pain or (2) after fucking? or (3) all of the above?

Some lidocaine on the glans penis with a condom to prevent numbing up your partner, might slow down an overeager ejaculator. Some viscous lidocaine, gargled, might encourage an overeager throat fucker.

Some lidocaine on the rectal verge might expand the horizons of a tight assed recipient.

Some lidocaine on the nipples might take nipple play to a whole new level.

Some people look at lidocaine and say Why? I look at lidocaine and say Why not!

So much to say, too much of it a repeat.

I hope the Lidocaine (a.k.a. Xylocaine) was as a gel, and not as an ointment = dissolve the condom.

Benzocaine not the same. B. is an ester and Lido. is an amide. BIG TIME difference in chemistry

Chance of allergy to Lidocaine near zero. Benzo, I forget, but close to 10%

Chance of adverse cardiac events near zero "in clinically relevant concentrations."

[i used to give the intro. lecture on local anesthetics to the 3rd Year Med. Studs. at the University of Chicago-

and all of it from memory, with a chalk board and chalk.]
