I don't use Apple TV but from everything I've read it is woefully overdue for an upgrade. You might not be doing anything wrong. It might just be lagging behind.

 

So today I wandered on to iTunes radio on my iPhone and discovered that I could stream my stations to my Apple TV. Go figure.

 

I think Apple TV was upgraded over the weekend. When I turned it on I was greeted by a "what's new" page.
