Had read a lot about this movie and finally got to see it this past weekend. Have to say, I enjoyed it and thought it was erotic and eerie and made a strong yet ironic comment about gay men and some of the choices that they (we?) make about lust/love and the perception of danger.

Also, it was graphic as Hell (tons of full frontal, full on hardons and one splashy cum shot.... anal and oral, too) and the sex seemed every bit as real as the real sex in "I Want Your Love" and "Shortbus". Only to my taste, sexier (the two lead actors are hot) and in a better film.

Anyone else see it?

Yes Oklie ... just yesterday ... it suddenly appeared on Netflix.

It was certainly intense. And ... given the way that other movies on Netflix have been censored in the past, I was quite surprised at how explicit a couple of the shots were.

In the end, I found it deeply disturbing, and am still trying to think my way through my reaction to it vis-a-vis what I'd read about it.

Certainly, it was a French film, not an American one ...individual static shots held a lot longer than would ever be permitted in an American film.

Not sure how I feel about the character development, and am still wondering about the ending ... and the fat that one of the shots that was in the trailer was not in the version of the film I saw. Curious.

Definitely worth watching.

I saw this movie a couple of months ago in the theater. I also found it a bit disturbing, especially the notion that having sex with the wrong person, could lead to one's demise. From what I read, the actual hardcore scenes were performed by porn-actor body doubles and edited in to make it look like the lead actors were the ones doing it.

I'm so glad Okie started this thread because I probably wouldn't have seen the movie otherwise. The movie seemed very French, clearly not a film that could ever be made here. The way the suspense built was so different in its approach, but in the end, no less effective. Gotta confess, I started watching it for the beautiful lead, whom I will definitely keep an eye out for in the future (although any movie in which Pierre Deladonchamps keeps his clothes on is gonna be a major disappointment), the full-frontal nudity, and the hot sex. But I got drawn in by the character study and the intrigue. Yes, a deeply disturbing film, but one worth watching.

BTW, leeper, I noticed in the credits two doublures (translates to either "stand-ins" or "stuntmen") were listed. Since there were no stunts in the movie, maybe they were the two gents who doubled in for the cumshot. Another BTW, Pierre Deladonchamps won the Cesar (the French Oscar) for Best Newcomer for his role in "Stranger by the Lake." His performance is indeed terrific in what is a very complex role. Always great to see an actor that beautiful can actually act too.

I thought it was OK. Watched at Lincoln Center a few months ago. It's on netflix now. Anyhow, in the audience were a mother and daughter who sat through the entire film. I guess she brought her daughter there to practice her french.... needless, to say i felt a little uncomfortable especially during the pretty graphic sex scenes.

Here's a look at the looker who plays the lead in Stranger By The Lake. Trust me, he looks really good naked, and he's naked a LOT in this movie.

  • 2 weeks later...

titillated by this thread, I just now watched it via netflix.....I really liked the tight, spare, almost-Spartan production style.....clean and unadorned....no music....no slick, gee-whiz cinematography....no Hollywood gimmicks....

but, oh man, I hate endings like that!
