The situation has always been a bit sparse in South Africa. You are more likely to meet guys the old fashioned way, in bars and gyms.  I've haven't ventured onto the Grindr scene although I have a friend who met a university student in Johannesburg and reported a very good time.

https://rentmen.eu/Taylor_boyy in Jo'burg was fun and https://rentmen.eu/NicTate/ was recommended, but we weren't able to connect. In Cape Town, https://rentmen.eu/PoliteGent/ was an okay experience.   https://rentmen.eu/DiegoLeo/reviews/ is in Cape Town currently.  My experience with him is a mixed bag - once great, once very lacking, but he gets good RM reviews from what seem to be longtime and experienced members.

A few of the more successful escorts - who attract Americans and Europeans - advertise on Rentmen and are more expensive than the local guys who tell me that RM is too expensive for them. I was warned that it is not uncommon for two or three guys to run several ads for Johannesburg in a scam to cheat those American and European businessmen (money in advance and no show, money upfront and then they leave, sometimes with more than just their "fee").  How one knows is beyond me so rely on your experience and "gut feeling" when making arrangements.

In Cape Town, Beefcakes or Cafe Manhattan can often yield interesting guys who are more than willing, but with COVID I've no idea if they are operating.  Sometimes the local gym - many hotels used to have arrangements with local gyms - can yield interesting results.  Again, not sure what the COVID situation might be currently.

The info in this thread is still good IMO and can be relied upon, except that The Hothouse announced its permanent closure some months ago.

I find local opinion on the crime-rate is divided. Some friends report that casual street robbery, robbery from cars etc has increased while other friends feel the incidence of crime is unchanged. No one thinks crime has gone down.

With the pandemic, economic support for individuals and businesses has been very limited indeed. Unemployment is at very high levels (unofficial estimates are about 50%). It’s been a tough 2 years for many people there. Be careful and smart when hiring.
