Does anyone actually go to Detroit and make any money?

So I've heard of a couple of posters here who said they have visited Detroit and did well there. But with what I've been reading up on, listening to, and seeing along with hearing from others...it seems like a virtual wasteland. Is it the people of Detroit that are poor, or simply the city's budget or it being concentrated to just the inner city areas?

Is it even possible to make a dime there? Or are people making shit up? I know the news tends to fabricate things and not cover the whole story sometimes. Similiar to how you only hear bad things about Oakland but never hear about Alameda.

The news lately has been focused on the bankruptcy filing by the city of Detroit which can be attributed to a declining population, poor budgeting and corruption in city hall, among other things. As one who "hires" my guess is your clients would hail from the suburbs like I do. Many of the suburban communities are thriving and should provide you with an ample audience of well to do men willing to hire.

Interestingly, even with the bankruptcy, the city is experiencing a resurgence with the younger generation.

I cannot speak to the issue of whether escorts make money or not in Metro Detroit. I can say, however, that the economic reality in the suburbs (where the majority of Metro Detroiters live) is vastly better than what is going on within the city. The areas of Royal Oak, Birmingham, Bloomfield Hills, the Grosse Pointes and others seem to be doing very well....and that is where the money is in the metro area.

I've heard it's an excellent place to make money, but you have to keep your visits fresh and not overstay your welcome. But I guess that's true of any city. I've thought about trying it out as well as some of the other places I've lived where I didn't escort, to see how things are.

Chris come visit!

I live just north of the city, in Ferndale, Closest thing we have to a gay neighborhood. I've been known to spend a buck or two on escorts :-) The other locals are correct,it's a sad case of impoverished city and affluent suburbs. There's regrowth going on downtown, a couple businessmen determined to invest, but it's slow going. I, for one, would be happy to work in the city proper; I know people who'd do anything to avoid it, but i'd like to be part of the regrowth.

Oh okay. Thanks for the links. I can probably see why part of the reason would be lol:

Houses under 6,000

If Detroit eventually ends up becoming like San Francisco, people would better get on that now lol. With that said, the only reason I could think of going to Detroit is if I wanted to fly there, rent a car and drive to Toronto.

My fitness coach from high school when I lived in Florida was from Detroit. He pretty much mentioned the same about the vast difference between city and suburb. But from to an outsider, it's almost hard to believe how a city can be so remotely different, especially in this day where downtowns in most cities are being converted from warehouses to lofts.

Ugh, tell me about it. I'm so ready to get out of Denver. I've overstayed my own welcome here in more ways than 1. I'm so ready to get out of here. I'll be on the east coast next week, I want to get away from here so bad, I've got to have a starting point somewhere. I can't even go out on a Friday night without being reminded of why I hate this place as much as I do. I can't even walk out the door without being reminded, why the hell am I still living here when there's absolutely nothing going on?

...anyway, back on topic lol.

This is a bit of a tangent, but on my way home the other day I heard an interesting story on the radio about Detroit that put things in more of a perspective for me:

http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=204895915

As others have said, the declining population has been a big part of it. The story said that Detroit had two million people over 140 square miles total at its peak, and now it's declined to 700,000 yet still has all that land and infrastructure to maintain. They mention that Boston, Manhattan and San Francisco could all fit into Detroit with room to spare, and yet a population of just 700,000 has to finance the upkeep of all that area. Some blocks have just a couple of houses still occupied, yet the city has to provide utility and life safety service to those houses and it becomes expensive. I found that all interesting and a real challenge... what do you do with it?

If I had more availability to tour I'd want to check Detroit out. It's also been trying hard to cultivate an art scene. Here in SF the art scene is getting squashed by the high cost of living, and the artsy types I know have been leaving town for places like Oakland, or further afield places like Detroit or NOLA.

So Bryant I know this has gone off topic, but from what others have said here sounds like there a visit there could pan out. If I were you I'd check it out.

No, not off topic at all. Totally relevant. And some very good points. I'll have to catch up on this later...but yeah.

It might be interesting to get Dane Michaels' perspective. He's there now (he arrived today). He has one advantage over other escorts though. He's been there frequently because he is from the area. So I don't know how much more business that would mean for him because he would be seeing previously existing clients, even though he had been retired. But it'd still be interesting to get his perspective.
