San Antonio

I lived there in college and into my 20s so take it with a grain of salt but I have fond memories of San Antonio. It's big enough that you're not tripping over the same people all the time but small enough if you're not looking for a New York City or something. It's very affordable, friendly people, great Mexican food, quite a few bars if that's your thing, lots of tourists and military so there's some churn in who lives there though lots of natives too. It's a few hours to the ocean but that's a given. With DFW and Houston airports being hubs, you don't have lots of direct flights and end up going through those airports to get many places. Any other specific questions?

Can anyone tell me what it's like there for a middle aged, gay guy. Hispanic/Latino, comfortable with his sexual identity.

I live in Houston but went to San Antonio for three days about a Year ago as part of my retirement location search. I concluded that it was a great place to visit for a few days as a tourist but not a place to live (at least for me). I felt like I would get bored after a while. Also, apart from the obvious places of Riverwalk, the Alamo, and the mercado, I didn't find it to be a very attractive place.

Anyway, just my two cents. It's true that it is very affordable with a low cost of living.

San Antonio is on the western edge of the Texas hill country which is the prettiest part of Texas. Personally I prefer Austin but San Antonio would be the only other place in Texas that I would live. The River Walk is fun, the people are nice and the climate is bearable. No only is the Mexican food great; some of the best barbecue joints in Texas are within easy driving distance.

My work took me to SA often until three years ago and I found it to be the only place I have ever been where sexy escorts were flagging down cars on the streets near the bars. It looked like what I have heard about Hollywood Blvd in the late 20th century. I also found the city fascinating and multi-layered in other areas. There were interesting retaurants, beautifully preserved historic districts, a great business climate, and nice people. It offers sports, music, shops, food of high quality, but also a certain sleazy side which appeals to a sleazy guy like me.

Visited San Antonio a few years ago to meet a very "intellectual" escort who was not that much fun. But I loved the area including the Riverwalk where I walked to eat and also went thru by boat. Great to see the Alamo and the mission. Pleasant area but not for me to live. I need the sea near me. Love the vast expanses of water.

It has been a while since I regularly traveled to SA, but the area where young (mostly) hispanic guys hung out was around the bars of Main Street. There were about 4 bars right together and the guys hung out behind and around the corners from them. Gay culture (and law enforcement) changes so quickly and often. The bars may even have moved by now. There are of course many risks of picking guys off the street and most of you will think me a total fool for even considering it. In retrospect, I think I am probably a total fool, but I have to admit I totally loved it. I met some really nice and actually pretty cute guys.

San Antonio is a nice town. I've visited friends there many times, but have no clue as to gay life there. A favorite escort, Benjamin Nicholas, lives there, but I have only seen him in Austin (60 miles north of San Antonio) or in Houston (my hometown). Everything that has been said, above, rings true to me (with the exception of comments on gay life and escorts as I have never had the opportunity to sample either). Note: there are other restaurants other than Mexican, Tex-Mex, or BBQ and the cultural scene is decent with the added advantage that Austin and Houston are close for additional opportunities for cultural events and performances. San Antonio proper and the surrounding communities are excellent in terms of price for homes and amenities (Kerrville, for example).

I've visited quite often. And while I'm mostly familiar with the downtown area, I disagree with the poster who didn't think it was attractive. The landscape has some rolling hills and there are trees. I definitely wouldn't mind living there.

I lived in Austin for two and half years in the late '90s, so I had a chance to visit San Antonio time to time. It was my second-favorite Texas city behind Austin.

I can't speak to the gay life per se except to say there are a lot of hot Hispanic men populating the streets there! SA has a personality and a nice Tex-Mex mix, which I liked. I preferred it over Dallas and Houston. Except for liberal Austin, the state is pretty darn conservative. But big-city conservatism is usually a bit tempered.
