Holland was in the news twice this week: His Highness Willem Alexander and something that went slightly unnoticed: the yellow rubber duck ...

"Florentijn Hofman is a Dutch sculptor that often plays with recognizable objects, turning them into works of art that not even the most cynical can ignore.

Such is the case of the giant rubber ducky. The ducks are pieces in his latest product series. Hofman sends out the giant plastic sculptures loose in big cities around the world.

The biggest duck so far is said to be 26 meters (105ft), almost the size of a 10-story building. It was displayed in St-Nazaire, France, according to the TwistedSifter.

Other Unidentified Floating Objects matching the duck's description were spotted in Japan, New Zealand, The Netherlands, Brazil, Germany and Belgium.

"The Rubber Duck knows no frontiers, it doesn’t discriminate and doesn’t have a political connotation. […] The friendly, floating Rubber Duck has healing properties: it can relieve mondial tensions as well as define them," the artist said, explaining his vision. "

They had one of these in the Thames in London over the last year or so, and just last week there were pictures of the same thing in Hong Kong.

Definitely a double-take sight to see!

Yes....I remember the giant duckie going down the Thames about a year ago. It's supposed to be US-bound shortly......but to which cities??

Apparently the ducky just arrived in Hong Kong's Victoria Harbour on May 2nd

According to http://www.wcyb.com/image/view/-/14788232/highRes/6/-/vdpq4i/-/site-header-logo-jpg.png

Next stop for Rubber Duck is the United States. The exact destination is a closely guarded secret.

"I can't say, it's confidential," said Hoffman.

"In the States it will stay a secret until the last week."

Well it's a cinch that it won't come to Philly - too reminiscent of a tragedy that happened a while back where people in duck-boats were killed when run over by another boat on the Delaware.

It is kinda fun, but is it Art?

If there is enough doubt to ask the question, then it is undoubtedly art. Now as to whether it is memorable and eternal or merely a passing whim, I go with a passing whim.
