Hey

I got this FBI Computer Virus. Here is a link to a description about it (not the actual virus)

http://pctuneup.org/fbi-virus-removal/?gclid=CM2YruvS97YCFYlQOgodjFMAuw

Does anyone have any insight on how to get rid of this? I can log in under "Safe Mode with Networking" but if I try to log in regularly my computer is locked down. I have followed the instructions on here on how to get rid of it but no luck. I am just thinking about chucking this computer (a Dell) and going for a Mac.

Any help from some computer techie people?

hey rvwnsd

thank you for responding. I did try what Norton recommended but what happens when Norton is scanning my computer will just shut down after 5 to 10 minutes of scanning. Any time I try to run any kind of virus scan or Malware it will run and then just shut down in the middle of it.

Anybody have any other advice (the Mac is looking better and better now).

Sounds like you have something far worse than the FBI virus going on. Unplug everything and take that machine to the Geek Squad!

Good advice. They found and removed a nasty virus out of my Dell computer when I was ready to give up on it like you. I think the charge was $125. They will also come out to your house, but the charge for an in-home service call can get pricey...

Thanks for the advice

I will consider Geek Squad but when I got this computer in 2010 it did not work. I had to return it, got a new one and that hard driver died. It was replaced and about 18 months later the replacement hard drive died. So - in a sense - this is my 4th hard drive in 3 years (plus the battery for this computer also died and I had to replace it). This laptop is my 3rd Dell. I got 5 years worth of use out of each my 1st two Dells and this one seems to be cursed. I know a Mac would cost 10 times the $125 repair cost from Geek Squad but I am to the point that I am over this computer and do not want to put any more money into it.

I vote for getting a Mac.

If you could spend $125 and end your troubles for good, then maybe it would be worth it. But, it seems to me that it doesn't make much sense to put more money into an old computer that is very likely to continue causing your headaches.

Giving that information and the poor history of reliability with this computer, then I'm with Corndog...get out while you still have your sanity and get a Mac....

I got a virus on a Toshiba laptop about a year ago and I bought a new Toshiba laptop immediatly. Still, I had the hard drive replaced on the infected machine for a larger one. Fortunately by a friend who is a computer geek so it did not cost an arm and a leg. However, the damn thing has still been problamatic ever since. Good for a spare machine... but not much else, but that was my intention. Do some research and replace your machine. I didn't want to have to learn Apple... but I did consider buying one.

Sounds like you've already made up your mind to buy a Mac and just want a permission slip to spend the money.

OK, go.

Norton walked me through this virus hell a few weeks back. The NPE software download cleared the problem. Norton actually worked with me via chat on my other computer and ran the scan for me to clean things up. They were VERY helpful. I changed my passwords and have not logged on to my bank accounts from the older computer which recieved the virus. Just to play it safe.

I am on my third Sony laptop and have loved every one of them. I have the Kaspersky anti virus and anti everything else and have only had one problem which the Geek Squad fixed. I always buy my laptops from Best Buy because of the service and their are excellent. I have a Dell desktop and had a virus on that, and the Geek Squad came to the house and cleaned everything and installed a commercial version of Kaspersky and never had a problem since. IMHO the Kaspersky antivirus and anti every thing else is the best you can get. It will even tell me when I am potentially visiting a site that is known for its malware and other problems. This is particularly true for a lot of porn sites. I think they get paid extra to inflict computers with viruses that allow that site to pick your computer of passwords, etc. Good luck with any decision you make, as it is an awful experience to have these problems.

I wouldn't chuck your computer yet. Download Kaspersky (sp?) anti virus on another machine and install it via USB when you're in safe mode.

I had the same virus, but in my case, it wouldn't let my machine work in safe mode either. I had to start the machine up using a USB, which worked.

BTW, Macs DO get viruses, just not as often as PCs.. There are more viruses targeted at Macs now that a larger percentage of the population has them.

But still GET A MAC... Apple frequently publishes new OS X Software Updates to handle the majority of issues. And "VY-RUSS" isn't typically a Mac issue. Most of the Mac issues are TROJANS (not the condoms) which Apple fights in those frequent updates.

In 28 years of operating Macs, I've never had a virus. I've had a trojan once that I avoided by being wise with my clicks. But then Apple published a quick fix in an OS X update shortly after I saw the Trojan.

Just be aware that if you go the MAC route, they have done away with the DVD drive as part of the computer. You have to buy an external DVD drive for around $79.00 which you plug into a USB port. I know for a fact that this is true for the desk tops, not sure about the MAC Book Pro laptops.
