In his review of her new movie, legendary gay film critic Rex Reed calls her "truck sized" and a "hippo" and says that has made a short career out of being "equal parts obese and obnoxious." He's getting quite a bit of hell on twitter and elsewhere.

I've only seen her once -- in one of the worst movies of 2011 -- Bridesmaids. It was awful. She was awful. It proved that women can be just as gross and disgusting as men. Does seem she is making a career out of that.

"It was awful. She was awful." To each his own. I had never heard of Melissa McCarthy before Bridesmaids. I'm a huge fan now. Kristen Wiig is a comic genius. Bridesmaid was the best comedy of 2011.

I have a different few of humor. Fart jokes, puking, and being in general disgusting is not "comic genius" to me. Woody Allen is comic genius. Groucho is comic genius. Bridesmaids is just an Adam Sandler movie with breasts and a lot of vaginas.

I thought that Bitter Old R.R. Queen Passed Year's Ago! He must be 100 by now!

Well at least with his always "Tacky Remarks" we all know he is still around!

Especially when those "tacky remarks" are 100% spot on.

Like BG...who as I have said many times not only tells it like it is, but most often tells it right... I also thought that RR had met his demise a while back... or at least had retired to the "old critics rest home"... But one lives, learns, and is updated... Still, good to know I was not the only one not "in the know"!

At any rate, I am also glad that RR still has a umber of fans who appreciate that he is still doing his usual thing!

Just as a lot of us are glad to know that you are still doing okay in the blizzard. You all got hammered. Now I like getting hammered as much as the next guy, but not like that. So good to see you here WG. Been thinking about you a lot the last few days.

She has a hit prime-time show, two Emmys and an Oscar nod. He has a tiny column and most people thought he was dead. Perhaps he should find someone his own size to bully.

I'm another one of those who thought he was dead. I remember him from when I was a boy watching the gong show in the 1970s. I guess when he was younger, he looked kinda like Adam Lambert does now. Not a nice thing to say about Ms McCarthy, although she does have a serious problem.

Much as only you have seen the elusive Dallas reboot, you have apparently also seen a movie in much the same vein. Bridesmaids was a a great movie and Melissa was hilarious in it. Perhaps you'll share with us your thoughts on the fifth season of Enterprise.

Film critic Richard Roeper got it pretty much right when he said, "This just smacks of mean-spirited name-calling in lieu of genuine criticism."

Paul Feig was more blunt and twittered, "I cordially invite Mr. Rex Reed to go fuck himself."

It's interesting that this is all about "attack the messenger" rather than address the comments. No matter what one thinks about Reed (and I find him rather repulsive) the fact is that his opinion that he she has made a career out of being obese and obnoxious is pretty factual.

Also, interesting that Reed is still being talked about over 40 years after he first came to prominence. I wonder if anyone will be talking about Melissa McCarthy 40 years from now? Somehow, I doubt it. She'll be replaced by then by another raunchy overweight "comic."

Yes, and apparently it's okay to talk about men in public life who are fat but, god forbid, one points out that a woman is obese and you are called all sorts of names.

And Paul Feig is a screenwriter. You think he could have come up with something more creative than that.

I'd respond to this, except that it doesn't make much sense.

I am surprised that you decided to lay all of this at Melissa's feet. She played only a supporting role in that film. In general audiences just love her, much the same way the seem to love Sandra Bullock and Sally Field. Yet at this point I dont see Hollywood offering Melissa, Sandra Bullock type roles at a similar age. Does it mean Melissa cant act, for what she has been given for roles she has done an excellent job. Her TV work is excellent. She has a personality, the draws the audience to her immediately when she is on screen. The question more importantly here is will Hollywood and the audiences give her a chance to act in something that goes beyond slapstick humor. She is far more the everyday woman than most of what Hollywood likes to give us.

A better comparison would probably be Lucille Ball. McCarthy is excellent at physical pratfall comedy, as was Lucy. Hollywood didn't exactly embrace Lucy, either.

Of course, Lucy was skinny so she was acceptable. <sigh!>

Hollywood didn't embrace Lucy? Really? She was TV's biggest female star for 20 years. Her death was treated like the death of a president. I don't understand where you're coming from on this one.

McCarthy is accepting the trashy roles. What other kind of roles could she be offered given her profile? No one is really making romantic comedies with fat people -- men or women.

I just don't find her kind of humor funny whether it's done by a fat person, a skinny person, a man, a woman, a child. I don't find farting and vomiting particularly funny. I didn't like the Three Stooges.

Jack Benny, Bill Cosby, Groucho, Bob Newhart ... many others. That's funny to me.

Bully? Seriously? It seems to me that it's the responses to him that are bullying. Basically telling him he has no right to speak and no right to that particular opinion. That's bullying.

Loretta Young won a Emmy, an Oscar and had a hit show. Today she's only remembered by a few old queens in drag bars. So I don't think that says anything about anything. McCarthy is the flavor of the day. In 5 years, probably less, we won't be talking about her at all.
