Lucky really liked this show when he was in NY. I have a ticket for Wednesday. I'm looking forward to seeing it. Spike looks good in his underwear so I'm hoping Row G, center orchestra will be close enough. Maybe opera glasses wouldn't hurt. I will post my review and I was wondering if anyone who has seen it would like to add their thoughts?

I had a great time and laughed a lot and Spike is so fun to watch along with all the other performers who all got to have their own center stage moments during the play. Highly recommended.

Thanks foxy for starting this thread and bringing this show to our attention... It's been a very selective season on Broadway... It will be interesting to see which shows get a Tony nomination... So, when a good one comes along you want to talk about it... "Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike" staring Sigourney Weaver and David Hyde Pierce is one of those plays you're glad to have seen. It's funny, deals with family rivalries, easy to follow, and has an excellent cast. And, let's not forget about Spike the stud played by Billy Magnussen. He's great entertainment.

With only 5 performances remaining, those still interested in seeing this play should make every effort to do so. I saw a Wednesday matinee, the performance was not sold out. You won't find these tickets at TKTS or TDF...

To give credit where credit is due Cash4Trash started a thread on this show a few weeks ago and I apologize for missing it and starting a new thread when I should have picked up on his. Anyway we all liked this terrific show and if it moves to Broadway try to see it.

There are several Youtube videos from the show that are fun to watch. Just do a search on the title and they will pop up.

This is definitely one to see. Funny just for funny's sake. And Magnussen is really hot. David Hyde Pierce has a rant in the second act that is just riotous. I will be curious to see how it changes in the larger proscenium theater.

Finally in Los Angeles

I am very excited. At Lucky's suggestion I have tickets to see this show here in Los Angeles this coming Friday night at the Mark Taper Forum. Christine Ebersole is performing the role that Sigourney Weaver played in the Broadway production, and David Hyde Pierce from the Broadway cast is directing. The show here has gotten rave reviews. Can't wait to see it.

I saw the production back in June 2013 on Broadway. The show is one of the funniest if not THE funniest play that Christopher Durang has ever written! I am curious how well it will hold up with other casts because absolutely everyone in the New York cast had the comic timing absolutely perfect! I doubt I’ve ever laughed so hard at a Broadway play before. I’m sure if the production in L.A. got rave reviews, it will be wonderful. Ms. Ebersole was excellent in the musical version of Grey Gardens in NYC a few years ago…she should make a very funny grumpy Snow White! ;)

Still laughing

I am so thankful to Lucky and the others who posted in this thread for recommending this show. We saw it last night and we're still laughing. Roars of laughter coming in waves from the audience, but the actors had sense enough to wait for us to catch up with them and I think we got to hear every joke.

Can't say enough about each cast member. Christina Ebersole plays Masha, the self-absorbed movie star to a "T". Mark Blum and Kristine Nielsen play Vanya and Sonia (the brother and adopted sister of Masha) with such understated skill, that when each get's their monologue later in the play, they explode off the stage with such force as to dazzle like bright stars. Shalita Grant plays the hysterical and hysterically funny cleaning lady and seer Cassandra (Beware, beware, beware). I am still laughing at some of her bits. And finally, for our family, there's Spike the wanna-be actor stud boy-toy of Masha, played with great skill by David Hull who spends a great deal of his stage time nearly naked, and does a wonderful job of playing a lump. An energetic one to be sure, but about as much acting talent as a stone. Liesel Allen Yeager plays the innocent young neighbor who acts a catalyst for all of the plays resolution.

Three of the cast are reprising their roles from the Broadway production, and David Hyde Pierce (nominated for a Tony for his performance) is directing this production. For those who know anything, about the plays of Anton Chekhov, you are in for a treat as well.

Set design is the same as the Broadway production and what a great realistic set. Great lighting and costumes as well.

Simply put, this is perhaps the funniest play I have ever seen (or at least the funniest in a long, long time.)

If I do this right, I am attaching some pics from the show.

Limited engagement until March 16 at the Mark Taper Forum here in Los Angeles.

Thanks for the pictures, Jackhammer. Mr. Hull has quite the impressive body. It’s too bad he’s a lump as far as acting goes (“…about as much acting talent as a stone.”) The original Spike in NYC, Billy Magnussen, is a performer with not only the perfect boytoy body for the character of Spike but also the perfect timing of a great comic actor! Still, even with that caveat about David Hull, your review indicates that the play seems to hold its own as hilarious comedy. I will actually see a local repertory production of this play in April and I’ll get to find out then just how well it holds up with no “stars” involved.

I am sorry I wasn't more clear in my review. David Hull as an actor did a great job of playing "a hard body actor wannabe with as much talent as a stone." His timing and performing skill was on a level with everyone else in the cast. It was his role to play a lump and he did it very well. Sorry I wasn't more specific in my praise for him as an actor.
