You're right. The bar has been raised and now in many markets the pressure is downward on pricing, and it's due to the same phenomenon that brought rates to their existing high-water-mark in the first place: the Internet. It seems to me that what happened is that, of the two interest groups, escorts mastered the Internet first and had the good fortune to do so at a time when clients' incomes were rising anyway, AND at a time when more kinds of guys from more kinds of backgrounds than ever before (even young hotties who worked in high tech) were hiring. Many of these guys did not come from the "elderly rich gentleman" mold but rather from more suburban, middle-class sensibilities. They were the kind of people who used Priceline and Expedia to make their travel arrangments, and got savvy about getting four-star hotels for two-star prices. It makes sense that at a time when the economy is in a downturn, that that same savvy is extending to decisions about hiring escorts. And as many have already said, any correlation between rates and quality is loose at best. I wouldn't say that none exists, just that the borders between tiers are extremely porous.

When new guys start out, especially if they're doing so in response to getting laid off and the need to raise money quickly, they don't know what kind of price they can command, and most don't really do their homework. Yes, as some have pointed out, some guys try and charge $300 even though they're not porn stars, but more commonly, at least in San Francisco, they charge a lot less than they could. When they get wind of what they could be charging, their rates tend to go up, or they move over from the "massage" section to the "escort" section, even if their repetoire doesn't change much. But when the economy's bad you're always going to have those incoming newbies giving it away (as seen from our interest group's perspective) and putting pressing on prices to drop.

So there are a lot of clients who will still hire that $200 dollar escort, but who will also take a chance on that $90 kid with no reviews that they saw on AOL or in the paper. That puts the pressure on those of us who want to keep our rates relatively high (mine, I think, are still pretty middle-of-the-road but the middle is getting lower than it used to be) to take our marketing and also the quality of the experience to the next level. For better or for worse, it probably does now take a more memorable evening to win over and keep a regular than it did two years ago, and a better "hook" to interest newcomers.

I've noticed that one part of my business that has held steady and if anything improved throughout the recession is the business from very inexperienced clients. This, I think, is because when it's time to come out it's TIME, and people will scrape together the money for something that's important to them, and will be less like to take chances on someone cheaper. It's the hobbyists, so to speak, who are doing the cutting back and comparison shopping. So now's a good time, if you're not doing so already, to look at how your marketing appeals to first-timers.

Just like your hole.

Just like Franco's hole.

I keep telling Benjamin that. When he lost his job and was scared about where his next meal would come from, and he said he was considering prostitution in order to eat, I told him to make sure to do his homework so that he didn't become another street hustler. Sadly, he ignored my advice - and now look at what's come of him.

Just like Franco's stomach - and chin.

It's amazing, isn't it, how many parallels there are bewteen trends in the escort market and the escorts themselves? Some say it's just a coincidence, but to me, there's a lot more to it than that.

Stick that in your diary, Devon.

Woodlawn, I am so agreeing with you on most things lately!!

One small quibble about this post, though. While I agree that the services rendered between a bad escort and a bad erotic masseur are probably about the same, a good erotic masseur offers a lot more. For example, my back feels wonderful after a session with bottomstud, and the way it feels today, I wish he were here even if he kept his pants on.
