I just quit, again =|. Hoping this electronic cigarette works well.

First time I tried to quit I was given wellbutrin by my doctor and turned into a raging schizophrenic who had hallucinations for a month. I started smoking immediately after I stopped taking the stuff so that I could try to feel 'normal' again.

Wellbutrin to stop smoking? I have never heard of such a thing. My friend just started on the electronic cigs. I am praying for him, but time will tell. I wish you luck in this most recent effort. BTW...glad to see you posting. I see rumors of your demise were greatly exaggerated. ;) Looks like Seek was correct after all.

Fortunately I didn't have any negative side effects from Welbutrin, although I used it in conjunction with Nicorette lozenges.

But the thing to remember for anyone using drugs to help in the quit process: THEY WON'T WORK unless you've already made up your mind to quit. In my case, I was ready. I'd made up my mind. The drugs (patches, Welbutrin, lozenges/gum, Chantix) cannot make you do something you don't want to do.

You have to want to quit.

Yes, and it's also used for weight control patients.

Shrinks think of it as a wonder drug because it has so many applications where keeping anxiety at bay would be useful.

Amen to all that and +10.

Getting off of it is actually the easy part. Staying off of it can be a life-long struggle and focus. Addiction is both a physical and mental disease. You have to work both sides of the coin to make it work.

According to the American Lung Association's "Report on Smoking Rates in Diverse Communities-2010":

-Gay men are nearly 2.5 more likely to smoke than straight men.

-Lesbian women are up to 2.0 times more likely to smoke than straight women.

-Bisexual men and women are more likely to smoke than both gay and straight men and women.

Yeah, I lost 22 pounds in a month -- I was a skeleton. This was about freshman year of college when this happened. The campus psych refused to give me adderall (adhd meds) unless I quit smoking -- told him I didn't want to quit/wasn't ready for it -- he said "suck it up, quit smoking or no more meds" and the rest is history.

good lord, maybe I'm old fashioned, but what ever happened to just quitting cold turkey?

they're cigs, not crystal meth. I've dealt with seeing friends go through major drug clean ups and the like, but for docs to be prescribing all of these drugs for a simple smoking habit? That seems a little heavy handed if you ask me.

I'm wary of anyone who thinks a pill can magically fix things.

Bupropion was sold as Wellbutrin for depression and under the name Zyban for smoking cesssation (partly because marketing thought some people might balk at being on an 'anti-depressant'.) It was also studied for some other addictions (e.g., cocaine). One of it's differentiators in early trials for depression was that people did not gain weight while taking it - which led to trials for weight loss.

There is evidence that some people are more prone to addiction than others. In some people, the brain chemistry involved in pleasure, reward, etc. differs. it is NOT equally easy for everyone to quit addictions.

And most of the pills, etc. acknowledge that the pill alone isn't enough -it's an aid.

Your last sentence is exactly what I said.

The rest of your post is head-in-the-sand bullpucky. Studies have shown that nicotine can be more addictive than crack cocaine in some people. Anyone who thinks "just quit" is a valid approach has a heavy body of science against them.

I hope you look better with it than the people they hire for the commercials that play in the mall kiosks. None of them look like they've ever touched a cigarette before.

Nicotine is one of the most addictive and toxic chemicals known.

Well said deej, nicotine addiction is very difficult to break for most. It is a very evil substance.

I've never smoked. But there sure are a lot of smokers on the patio at gay bars. My parents smoked, but they both quit about 50 years ago.

Might we take this in a new direction with a little levity?

Person A: Do you smoke after sex?

Person B: I don't know - I never looked.

I first heard that joke told as if it were a job interview question at a bordello.
