Old VHS Porn

It is spring cleaning time and I am thinking what to do with the relatively large inventory of VHS gay porn I had collected over the years. I took them out of storage the other day and am amazed at how many I have. I shudder to think of the many thousands of dollars I spent but I assure you I got alot of enjoyment out of them. Now my prime source of porn is on line so I face the following questions:

1. Is there a fast, easy and low cost method to transfer video from VHS format to digital DVD?

2. When getting rid of porn, how would you suggest I do so? Just throw it in the garbage or destroy each tape then throw it away? Any legal issues to be concerned about (i.e. inadvertently exposing someone to porn that shouldn't)?

I am unsure how inexpensive you wanted it to be but you can check this out http://www.amazon.com/Samsung-DVD-VR375-DVD-VR375A-Tunerless-Recorder/dp/B001TK3D40

It should do what you are looking to do based on the reviews. DVDs like VHS have a limited lifespan, if it is important that you save them for a longer period of time I would suggest buying some larger hard drives and storing them digitally that way.

I have no idea where you live but I doubt you have an obligation to destroy the tapes before you put them in the trash as long as they're sealed in a bag. If we had to worry about this every home would have a shredder to get rid of all those old skin mags.

Thanks for bringing this up! I too have a large collection of old VHS tapes, some of which I have ordered DVD versions but not all.

On the Amazon page that Phil pointed to, there are links to several sofware packages that, with a special cable (included) , allow you to transfer a VHS tape to your PC & then burn a DVD - or transfer directly to DVD as it plays. e.g. http://www.vhs2dvdconverter.com/vhs-to-dvd.php?tid=ADW13DVD%20Recorder%20VHS%20Combo & http://www.roxio.com/enu/products/easy-vhs-to-dvd/standard/overview.html?gclid=CIPQjNmj6a8CFUhl7Aodp3E25A

I haven't looked for reviews of these products yet, but they are much cheaper than buying another player. The only downside - I'd have to dig my old VHS player out of storage too!

Up to last year, i was sitting on a bunch of old porn i hardly used and decided to get rid of the valuable real estate space occupied by 4 large banker boxes of maybe 120 vhs porn tapes (falcon, belami, kristen bjorn) in my closet. Plus, I had a box of old masterpiece theater shows and some pbs programs (history of english) that i enjoyed watching 15 years ago that i taped but hardly ever used.

There is a place in the west village that will transfer vhs tapes to dvd for about 7 to 10 dollars per tape. For 120 tapes, you do the math. So i decided to search for a low budget alternative and decided to give up on waiting for techie friends (who i've been asking to help for the past 3 years or so) to help me and bought a sony recorder (Sony VRDMC6) on amazon-2nd hand for about 100$ and taped everything onto DVDs (used Sony DVD+R). The machine is very easy to use and has the benefit of having a screen so you can bypass the television as monitor. You just hookup the video and audio output from the vhs to the input of the recorder. The only negative is that it runs real time and you do have to babysit it. Just do a batch at a time. I set up the video operations in my closet with the vhs and dvd recorder so i didn't have to see the monstrosity of audio video equipment and wires (i have a minimalist white phillipe starck-like condo). Afterwards, i downloaded each DVD onto my WDTV harddrive and can watch the porn on my big screen tv (i love the vintage kristen bjorn... Carnival in Rio, Tropical Paradise). Note: For any copyrighted material, the screen will be blank and the machine won't copy unless you have a digital copy stabilizer(adapter) that descrambles the signal.

Over the span of 4 months last summer, i was able to copy each vhs, then transfer the dvd to my harddrive (I'm sure there's a smarter way of copying to the harddrive but I didn't know how). For copying the dvd onto my harddrive, i used a pay program called WinX DVD ripper)and dispensed of each batch of 5 or 7 vhs tapes by throwing it away in garbage cans around my neighborhood building whenever i left the house as I didn't want the service people in my building to unwittingly open up a bag of vintage porn.

Hope this helps!

With the ease of finding porn so easily online, I havent watched any of my own collection in years. YES I too have a HUGE colletion of VHS, and also a huge collection of gay magazines, honcho, Inches etc. Time to downsize.... no legal issues with putting this stuff in the trash, Just make sure its packed up discretely....

I havent even considered transferring any VHS. They just look so OLD and dated now. Ive moved on to the NEW stuff.

Did you have to buy an adapter to copy retail tapes (copyright protected)?

Has anyone else transferred retail tapes from VHS to DVD or PC? Did you have problems with copyright protections?

Update: The very nice review article that BostonPhil pointed us to covers whether the programs handle copyrighted equipment. :)

JJK, I'm in he same situation - I haven't watched anything from a tape or DVD in quite a while, but the collector in me is loathe to 'lose' those tapes (just as I find it very hard to get rid of books, even if it is extermely unlikely I'll find time to re-read them.) Not very rational perhaps. but... ;)

While sort of on the topic (but not really), and this might be really a stupid question, after downloading torrent clips, can those be burned to a DVD?

Sorry, wayout.

Yes, but it can take a long time to encode them to DVD if you plan on watching them on TV. Frankly I would suggest getting something like a GoogleTV or Apple TV and just stream them from your computer.

This kinda harkens back to my hoarding post a few months ago.... Seemed that there were many in our SAME situation. Its easy to "acquire" but hard to "get rid".....

I long ago got rid of all my VHS tapes after transferring to DVD and/or hard drive. Now, I actually want to clear out the DVDs themselves and keep them on hard drives but without diminishing any quality. Not just porn - I know how to rip a (store bought) DVD to hard drive as a TS folder by using Mac The Ripper or RipIt. But does anyone know how I can play that TS folder on my TV? I've tried playing files in various formats off of a USB stick through my BluRay player and/or my TV's USB port. Some formats work, such as avi, and some don't. I want the full DVD experience with menus, chapter stops and extras. And I don't want them to only play on Apple products.

I have never tried to play ripped DVD in this fashion and am not certain how you would do this. It doesn't help that I never cared about DVD menus or the special features.

Maybe check if a local gay organization takes them. There was one in the SF area that used to have a porn-related sale annually as a fundraiser, and they took old porn donations. (Sadly, they are no longer doing this).

You are right. the LGBT center in NYC takes donations which they resell to raise money for the center. Good Thought.

There is a Mac application called RipIt, which let's you rip a DVD to a drive 'as is'. But supposedly that file (TS) can only be played back on an Apple device such as ipad or Apple TV. That's unacceptable to me. And I hate playing avi files, or mp4s, or Quicktimes that don't have chapter stops like a DVD has. Also, I worry about the diminished quality.
