Old thread, but I just subscribed to Netflix (Arrested Development in three weeks!) and just watched this movie. There's one very brief frontal of Matthew as he strips & jumps into a pool, he didn't look ANYWHERE near as well equipped as these pictures show. Grower with a capital G?

I didn't think the film is very good, unfortunately. It's very predictable and not particularly believable. A few of the actors do a good job, but they can't overcome the writing.

It's a gay film. You just described 99% of the gay themed films. You can count the really good gay-themed films on two hands, if that.

Of the gay films I've seen, my favorite is still the much-reviled Boys in the Band. Even the hokey Lonely Hearts Club is much better than La La Land.

Least Favorite: A documentary called Gay Sex in the 1970s, which I had convinced a bf to see. The documentary is literally exactly what the title indicates: Footage of guys having sex in NYC in that era and interviews of guys saying "Boy, did I fuck a lot back then!" No interpretation, linking of the 70s to other eras, etc. The movie was just over an hour long, and many in the audience were looking at their watches after 30 minutes.

Actually, Broken Hearts Club is my all-time FAVORITE gay film. It's the best acted (maybe because most of the lead actors are straight!), one of the better written and a number of the leads have gone on to major stardom (that rarely happens with a gay film) ... I think I also wish I had had a group of gay friends like that in my early 20s ... life would have been completely different ....

Yeah, Lonely Hearts was on a totally different level than La La Land.

I'm with you operalover; what I'd have give to have a group of friends like that, in my early 20s or now.

Well, I have a group like that now -- well, more mature and settled -- but it too me 20 years to get to that point. I envied the guys in that movie somewhat.
