Web Sites

John:

As I lived in San Francisco for over a decade and continu to return for visits frequently, I have never felt the need to look up information, gay or straight on the web. However, if such exists, a simple search on a good engine such as Google should suffice.

However, if you have a book store which has any gay travel sections, which even in the South, may be possible in Barnes & Noble or the like, I would scan or purchase any travel book, as even those for primarily straight audiences will not ignore the gay population in a travel guide. Ideally, Dameron's or Sparticus would be best.

If you have specific questions, feel free to send me a private message. I am sure Devon, as well, would be of help, and any number of other escorts here travel that area frequently (Rick Munroe and Derek Ross, for example) or maintain a residence there (Steven).

Finally, I find that generally the escorts in San Francisco are both very non-competitive and very friendly. I have met more of them on purely social and friendly terms in that city than any other I have resided or lived in.

Good luck and enjoy San Francisco.

There are a couple of places I'd suggest you check for general info:

http://www.citysearch.com provides a good overview of all kinds of things, including bars, retaurants, events, and perhaps surprisingly (for such a mainstream site) sex clubs. You can search specifically for gay-oriented listings, and there are a fair number there. It's a good place to start for getting acquainted and seeing what's out there.

http://www.sfgate.com and http://www.sfweekly.com are web sites associated with local newspapers that people often use for checking movie listings and the like -- basically the kinds of things you'd expect to find in the newspaper, except you don't need to have the paper in your hand.

http://www.craigslist.org is a sort of odd site that has generated a somewhat cultish, underground following in recent years. It has forums, postings, listings, etc. and can be very amusing at times.

Probably the best place for club listings is a club rag called "Odyssey" which unfortunately does not have a web site, but is pretty easy to come by once you're here. It lists clubs and bars for each given night.

Like Franco said, you may be better off, or at least as well off, getting one of the gay-oriented tour books. I'd recommend either Fodor's or Access, which both have gay-oriented editions. And I'd agree that SF is very friendly and non-competitive -- the gay community has a sort of small-town character where it feels like everybody seems to know everybody else, and simply striking up a conversation with somebody in a bar or coffeehouse you can get more ideas of places to go and things to do.

So there's your homework! Feel free to send me a message as well if you have other more specific questions. And have fun!

RE: Web Sites

Hey John --

In case you want to hit the ground running before you're able to snag a copy of Odyssey (or Gloss, another club rag), some basic rules of thumb are:

Friday nights are strangely devoid of options. Pretty much the only game in town is Fag Fridays at The Endup (6th & Harrison).

A lot of the Saturday and Sunday events are produced by a promoter called Gus; they tend to draw a circuit-boy crowd. You might want to check out his website:

http://www.guspresents.com

Ongoing are Palladium (a Gus party) on Saturdays at 1st and Harrison and Sugar at the Stud (9th and Harrison).

Beer Bust at the Eagle (12th and Harrison) on Sundays is kind of fun. It's a leather bar but a lot of non-leather types show up on Sundays as well. The Endup also has Sunday T-Dance.

That's what I can think of off the top of my head. Have fun while you're here and feel free to give me a holler...
