RE: Message Board boredom

First of all, you are the namecaller. Secondly, there is no interchange with you. You have no sense of logic and anytime one tries to engage you in a discussion (and I'm certainly not talking about just me) you work on your own agenda anyway. I have absolutely no desire to debate with you. I have already stated that I will make my opinion of you and your ilk known and then move on. I don't see why you find that so difficult to understand. We don't like one another! It's really quite simple.

Not at all. I can't help noticing that ad rian is much more interested in complaining about the human rights violations of Israel than about the violations of other countries whose record in that regard is far worse. This leads me to believe that his problem is with Jews, not with human rights violations. But that doesn't mean that his complaints about Israel are unfounded, poorly reasoned or poorly expressed. I suspect his motives for saying what he says, but whatever his motives may be his posts are far more thoughtful, interesting and original than those of 95% of the other regulars here. They are in a different class from the tripe posted by people who, to use your phrase, think the size of some stripper's dick is the most important thing in the world.

Thanks for the compliment, I think. However, the problem with a message board like this is that we just see snapshots of each other. I defend human rights across the board. If I attack Israel here, it is to add belance to the discussion of the war on terror or the war on Iraq. In the great fight for divestment and economic sanctions in the 1980s against South Africa, the partisans of apartheid complained of selective emphasis then too. Now I see that you like Professors Dershowitz and Larry Summers at Harvard are doing the same.

My contention is that if Israel acts exceptionally, it will be treated exceptionally. Despite the fact that it makes some American Jews uncomfortable, there are really few if any other states around to day that are defined as a matter of their "constitution" on the basis of race, religion or ethnicity. (Even the Islamic Republics - for whom I hold no brief - that post-date the insertion of the zionist entity in Palestine are not segregated by ethnicity or race. And as I have pointed out before there are Christians in the Cabinet and Government of Palesrine, Turkey, Egypt, Lebanon Syria, Morrocco, Iraq etc, and even Jews in the case of Morocco. The same cannot be said of Israel, and no matter how many intellectual pirouttes and other assorted rhetorical gymnastics are employed by the Israeli/Jewish lobby in the United States is going to disturb that fact.) That is an idea that I cannot abide whether it goes by the name apartheid or zionism. I defend instead a cosmopolitan pluralist and secular humanist vision of humanity, and will continue to do so despite the name-calling or cat-calling here or elsewhere.

How theocratic of you, but I suppose if you can't defend your ideas rationally you have no choice but to take that approach. Given your starting positions, I sympathize with you.

That deserves a great big belly laugh. Yes, we all know how much discussions of Winnona Ryder's arrest and the resignation of Cardinal Law bring to mind the war on terror or the war on Iraq. This kind of gibberish would work better if your vile rants weren't so present all over the place, in threads having absolutely nothing to do with the subject you pretend to be debating. One doesn't have to be Jewish to smell the gefilte fish.

Again, you prove your own stupidity. My comments about Israel are all in threads about the war on Iraq or terror unless otherwise replying as here to your specious insults. As for Wynona Ryder, my comment about her real name was in the context of a thread about the Court sentance with respect to her. Likewise, my comment about abusive or mudering Jewish rabbis was in the context of threads about abuse by RC priests. I know logic is not your strength, but please try to keep the facts straight. I think I prefer your insults to these kinds of comments because I feel embarassed when you advertise your own stupidity so blatantly.

Sorry, ad rian, but when you called Dan a "hirsute mongrel" in I forget which thread, that didn't do much to put the war on Iraq in context, nor to give credence to your claim that there's no anti-Semitism motivating your many posts on Jews and Israel. It's too bad, because I happen to think that there is a lot wrong with our Israel policy and that of course it is wrong to conflate criticism of Israel with anti-Semitism. But with all due respect I think you've crossed over into a point where any arguments you make about Israel, including any valid ones, are inevitably going to be taken by more and more people (and not just people who have an axe to grind against you) as the continued rantings of an anti-Semite.

I don't know whether you are actually an anti-Semite or just relentlessly argumentative, to the point that if you find out the person you're arguing with is Jewish you'll try and hold him accountable for Israel's treatment of the Palestinians and otherwise bait him on being Jewish. I know a lot of similarly vitriolic things get said in the Catholic/anti-Catholic threads, and sometimes I think you're trying to dramatize your anger about that by saying inflammatory things, then protesting that you're merely critiquing our Israel policy. But whatever's really going on, it's turned you into an ineffective critic of Israel, because (I don't know this and can't prove it, but I believe that) at this point most people on here except the most zealously anti-Zionist associate the "ad rian" screen name with anti-Semitism. It would be easier to get a message across if you started over under a new screen name, built up an innocuous posting record and then put your "critiques" forward in less strident terms. That's when people usually change their screen names on this board -- when they sense they've exhausted their credibility under their old ones. I doubt you'll do that, because I expect you think you're holding to some kind of integrity by standing by your posting record. If so, that's fair enough. I just don't agree that your posting record on Jewish matters is one that deserves standing by.

At the risk of becoming a target, I believe these words sum it up precisely. I usually avoid reading further once these discussions degenerate to this stage x( .

It may surprise you, oliver, but I agree with you. If you check the many threads in which this subject has been discussed, I am not the one who constantly baits ad rian. I make my statement and move on in most cases. He sees what he wants to see and I believe he hopes to engage everyone in a long and tiresome debate on a subject that will never be settled on a message board. But there comes a time when his lies have to be pointed out. The threads are flooded with his incessant harping against Israel and Jews, and often in threads that started out on a totally different subject. He is a name caller and accuses others of calling him names. He's called me many, stupid being the most recent. I don't think he's stupid. It's unfortunate that this educated man has been consumed by his hate for not only a nation, imperfect for sure, but also for Jews in general. BTW, I'm a baptized Catholic, certainly a critic of the religion, but far from a hater of the many sincere Catholics, including most priests now finding themselves the butt of jokes caused by the inanity of much of their heirarchy.

Well, check the record, Devon and you will see that was only in response to a vicious attack by him on me. You are right though, I don't believe in unilateral disarmerment. I will go into the gutter to meet my oponents if that is the the place from which they choose to lob their attacks on me rather than my ideas.

I am happy to have anybody check the record on this. I respond to your attacks and await your logical responses. Sadly, they never come, but instead I see more name-calling.

I have pointed out, and the record will show that other than responding to attacks in threads like this, my attacks on Israel have come in threads about the war on terror or thewar on Iraq, and my attacks on abusive and murdering rabbis have come in theads about abuse by RC priests. And my comment about the Jewish actress who was under a Court order to use her name, came in a thread about the other aspects of the same court order.

I think this business of multiple screen names is pretty silly. I can't believe that people regard an anonymous on-line message borad as so crucial to their lives to require that. Look, Devon I travel widely throughout the world and my ideas of Israel are broadly shared everywhere but in Israel. I am comfortable with that, and have no hesitation of critiquing Israeli torture or occupation in public or private. As for the rest, I don't buy into the idea that we must throw a giant condom over the Jews alone to protect them from criticism for collective or individual bad acts. If we are going to start putting such condoms over entire races or ethnicities who have suffered or are suffering discrimination, I cant imagine why the Jews would be in the front of that line. I repeat to insist that Jews are beyond reproach is to infantalize them, and I will not do that. I have too much respect for them to do so.

Frankly, I have long suspected that this American penchant for insulating Jews from critiques has two roots: (1) a guilt about the refusal to act earlier to end the Holocaust and the turning back of boats of Jewish refugees from the Holocaust on the shores of America; and (2) a sense that it is easier to build a Holocaust museum on every street corner like new Gap/McDonalds/Planet Hollywoods/Hard Rock Caffes (take your pick) than to confront the legacy of American genocide against Africans and Indians. Where are those museums? Americans are not alone in this. Italians, French and Germans find it easier to to talk about the racist application of the death penalty in the U.S. than to confront either their own Nazi pasts or current racism against immigrants. In Europe, I call the Europeans on the carpet for this. In America, I call the Americans on the carpet for their defense of the racist zionist entity without apology, without regret and without hesitation.

Hey, JT! Happy New Year to you, too. You just put a big(ger) smile on my face. It's always nice to see you here; I just wish you'd stick around. We need your sensible but sexy point-of-view. As for TT, his life now revolves around his new puppy...I think it's softened him; he hasn't said anything nasty to me in months. :+

This probably should be posted under "things I have learned" but since it may spark some replies, I decided to do it here.

I have never participated in a message board before (as some have indirectly pointed out) so I am still struggling with the learning curve.

I have learned that:

1) You are supposed to post only opinions, not feelings. Ok, lesson learned. To those who have had to suffer through 27 (really that many?) post about depression, I guess I owe you the session fee that I pay my shrink. So, you know where I will be at the end of February, you can come and collect.

2)You are not supposed to use camp humor. Ok, well, I didn't know that since I am still coming out, so I was working with an old handbook. Graduating to spiteful, hardened, cold hearted bitch will take some doing so I will need more time.

3)Never be yourself. See, I got mixed up. I have been told that I am even supposed to post reviews under a different name. I just always assumed that I could be myself everywhere on this board. I didn't realize I was supposed to develop different handles and personalities to match my moods. Ok, lesson learned. If I can't say something as Jackhammer91406, I won't say it. That should help slow down my posts.

4)There are some very good people on this board. That is what drew me here in the first place. Other wise, I would never have thrown my two cents worth in . (ok, to some, the monetary value of my offerings is devalued to lower than two cents, but that's the price you pay when you visit any foreign territory.)

5)You have to have a thick skin if you are going to express yourself. (see number 1) I hope that I can develop that over time. In the meantime, there's this stuff at the drugstore called "new Skin". It's like a liquid bandage. I am on my 33 bottle of it so until I get number 1 down cold, I have protection.

6) Keep your friends close but your enemies closer. Well, I am not used to having enemies, but in case there are some, you know where I'll be the last of Feb. Come on over and we can work on it. There are surely some locals who can referee if needed, and if not needed maybe they will join in (it is a big suite at the hotel).

Sorry this was so long, but there was so much to learn and I am still cramming for the final exams.

PRIVATELY: To Franco, my sincere apologies.

To fukamarine....BITE ME. (see, I am learning)

Man, you've confirmed what I, as a message board neophite, believe to be a worst case scenario. Some messages, opinions, or musings genuinely seemed interesting, even helpful. I agree with your implied notion that getting into a new experience hardly lends itself to towering self-confidence. Slams in response to your postings may seem unfair, but beyond that, consider that they more so discredit themselves by their own nature.

For what it's worth, I appreciate your openness. I think others actually do learn from it -or at least I do. Truck on fella. At some point all you can do is say, "Whatever."

You seem like a really decent guy; just move on from this, and know that there are others who are going to leap into the same mire - like me.
