I just saw this movie last night and thought it was incredible. Julianne Moore gave a stunning performance and Dennis Quaid was very good as well (and he still looked very good after being dumped b Meg Ryan). The story of racial tension and homosexuality that the movie told was a very topical one and I thought it was more effective since the movie was set in the 50's. I do not want to say too much more about the film so not to ruin it for anyone but it is definately worth going to see.

Greetings & More~

Ever since 'Boogie Nights' i've been a certified Julianne Moore junkie. As an actress she's top notch and usually tends to make good choices in the scripts she takes... always a good thing. From the sounds of things, her initial Oscar might be closer than she thinks.

Although, i can't completely commit to her bandwagon, as i haven't seen 'Chicago' yet ;)

I've been waiting for that flick for years. A little razzle-dazzle around December 27 is just what i'll need after the holidays.

Warmest Regards,

Join the crowd, kiddo.

A little Matron Momma Morton (aka Queen Latifah) should be just the thing for a little holiday blues. The trailers for that film are looking good on the entertainment shows, and I was expecting a flop.

I just hope I can get the mental image of Nathan Lane doing Mamma Morton out of my mind. If not, I might just giggle my way through it. :9

I also thought Far From Heaven was a great movie. It reminded me of my own "perfect" childhood, where nothing was quite what it seemed--especially that perfection that seemed to radiate throughout the 50's. Dennis was great, but I also agree that Julianna was fabulous.

Another Julianna Moore film I enjoyed a great deal was "Cookie's Fortune" with Patricial Neal and Glenn Close. It was similar to FFH in that Glenn's character was obsessed with appearances. Set in the south, as was my childhood, my first comment as we were leaving the theater was, "I think I'm related to that family!" I was rolling in the floor laughing throughout the movie and it's been added to my DVD collection. Perhaps it's a southern thing, but I highly recommend it.

Guest Kenny021

Have been a fan of Moore since she was a regular on the soap "As The World Turns". Thought she was especially good in "The End of the Affair". As for Chicago, I didn't know she was in it. I've been lead to believe that the "stars" are Rene Zelwigger and Catherine Zeta Jones and Richard Gere and Queen Latifa. What part does Julienne Moore play?

Another Julianne Moore fan here...usually if she is in a project you can be sure that it will be a good movie (not always..remember 9 months with Hugh Grant?)

I hear that Dennis Quaid has to kiss a guy in it.....interesting. I would pay to see that :) He is so cute!

As i hijack this thread into a 'Chicago' talkfest...

From friends of mine who have already seen screenings of 'Chicago' it seems that Richard Gere steals the show. No, not with his (in)famous toothless gerbil routine, but his tap skills. As a trained hoofer myself, it'll be a blast to see if Gere lives up to the publicized hype. I already know that Zeta-Jones will tear things up, seeing as she grew up onstage in the West End starring in the original '42nd Street.' Zellweger's a toss-up but looks promising.

Damn, i feel like such a shill :)

All-in-all, 'Chicago' may not re-usher in the age of musicals but it should be a good way to spend $8. Who knows... Maybe it'll wash the crappy taste out of my mouth that was 'Moulin Rouge.'

Julianne is not in Chicago.... its stars are:

Renée Zellweger

Catherine Zeta-Jones

Richard Gere

Queen Latifah

Christine Baranski

John C. Reilly

Mya

Taye Diggs

Lucy Liu

and... (in a cameo) Chita Rivera

In response to another post... wouldn't Nathan Lane have been more appropriate as Mary Sunshine?

:)

>$8? Where on this planet is a movie still $8? :p

Outside NYC. Plenty of places in Jersey are less than 8, have bigger screens, and stadium seating. My favorite place is maybe 20 mins outside the city ..I took a date there once and he compared the design to a fancy hotel lobby. It might be a trip worth making if you have some time.

RE: Far From Heaven & Chicago hijack

I loved Far From Heaven. Moore had two great moments in it. the first one is at the lunch when her friends are discussing their sex lives and she doesn't say anything but the last shot of her laughing says it all. Her other great moment, more of a techinal one, is when the tear rolls out of the corner of her eye when she's in the wood with Dennis Haysbert. I really don't care for Quaid as a rule, but he give the performance of his career here. His bravest scene isn't really the one where she catches him with another man as much as it it's (spoiler warning!) the one where he breaks down and cries in front of her and the children. Haysbert was good too.

I saw the stage version of Chicago here in NYC for the second time yesterday. From what I know of the roles, Catherine Zeta-Jones is well cast, but I have my doubts about Rene Z. Queen Latifah is fat enough to play Mama Morton, yet too young and pretty.

I too greatly enjoyed "Far From Heaven". Moore was terrific, but more than her star turn I enjoyed and was moved by the nuanced way the film approached its themes.

In particular I was moved by the final dialogue scene between the husband and wife characters -- the phone call setting the day for the meeting with the attorney that would seal their divorce. She will clearly continue, diminished but determined. Not so clear about his future -- an uninteresting, anonymous hotel room, a self-involved cutie not-listening, completely uninvolved with this important moment in his lover's life, with an implication of loss that speaks volumes for the fates of so many gay men in the 50's.
