Can you native New Yorkers give an opinion on the weather in New York in October above and beyond me just looking at weather charts? I have selected this month because as an opera buff the Met does get into full swing until late September. Also it would have to be after the 9th (my mothers birthday, and at 92 she may not have many left).

October can be the best month of the year in NYC, with mild "Indian Summer" days between 12 and 22 degrees C. The foliage in Central Park can be gorgeous. Last year I was in the city on Oct. 9th, and it was ideal. But then again, I have experienced cold, wet and windy days during October as well. This year there was even snow at the end of the month. New York is not a place where one can confidently predict the weather, especially far in advance. Nevertheless, if someone were to ask me when, in general, is the best time to visit NYC, I would usually say September and October.

I was in NYC on one of those glorious Indian Summer days in October once when I saw weather reports saying Seattle was having a major winter storm.

Being the cheering up sort I picked up the phone and called a friend, a native New Yorker, who was working in Seattle at the time and said "It's 80 degrees and sunny here!"

I won't repeat her response. She IS a native New Yorker.

October has always been my favorite month to visit New York. This year we ran into heavy rain and even snow. But it is usually quite nice.

However, I have gone to NYC in October many, many times, and I can say with authority that you will not find glorious fall colors in Central park until November.

Outside of Manhattan, sure. But the heat from the big buildings keeps the fall color at bay until November.

This year I went to Central Park on October 31st, the day after the big snow. The park trees were all green...and white!
