Thinking of going somewhere for New Years. Want a warm destination near water, preferably in the United States. How is Miami for New Years? Any better destinations? We want to go somewhere that is very gay friendly.

So if Miami is the place to be, where to stay, what to do while there?

I haven't been in Miami in years and years. Thanks in advance for your thoughts.

To close to home. We're from AZ, and get to Sandy Eggo pretty often, an easy weekend jaunt. Thanks for the thought though.

Oops, based on your name (Eastbayguy), I just assume you were from the east coast.

Don't know about Miami since I've never been there. But I've had wonderful times in Fort Lauderdale. I've also had many friends that have enjoyed Key West.

Have you considered maybe taking a cruise out of Florida? That could be interesting. :7

For reliably warm weather at New Year's in the U.S. (near the water) you're pretty much limited to South Florida, Hawaii, Puerto Rico or the Virgin Islands.

If you're willing to consider something farther afield, Rio de Janeiro (which is certainly gay-friendly) has one of the world's most spectacular New Year's celebrations with millions of revelers massing right on the beach, with candomblé religious ceremonies and offerings, live entertainment and a thrilling fireworks display. If you can spot me in the crowd, that's where I'll be spending my New Year's Eve!!!

A similar, if smaller, event takes place in Funchal, the capital of the gorgeous Portuguese island of Madeira, which is also a winter resort. Air fares and package deals to either place might not be a whole lot more expensive than a trip within the U.S. And you'll have much more to talk about when you get home than if you just go to South Beach or Key West!

It's hard to go wrong with South Beach. My boyfriend and I have gone there a few times around Christmas or New Year's. Good restaurants, good clubs, nice weather, very gay friendly (at least in Miami Beach), cruisy park, and you can walk around everywhere. The men are incredible. We stay at the South Beach Villas, which is over on the west (less fashionable) side of South Beach, but it's a small gay resort and very very friendly. But of course there are lots of swankier big places to stay if that's what you're looking for. It's the best warm weather gay destination I can think of.
