An acquaintance of mine recently found his "partner for life"...anyway, I asked him how he overcame the issue with his Herpes2 (he shared this with me prior to meeting "Mr. right"). He told me that his partner just decided that since they were going to be together "forever" that he just allowed him to infect him. I was shocked, are people out there really so OK with Herpes these days?

I know that a significant part of sexually active America has Herpes 2 but are people really so casual about this out there? I am not sure what the statistics are, but I would bet that having Herpes also increases ones chance of acquiring HIV not to mention a host of other STD's.

This seems stupidly reckless to me, am I over reacting?

Ok I think being reckless is stupid. But if you have a long term partner. Simple cautions during outbreaks are called for. A little abstinence at times even. But if infection transmits. .... so be it. Though you don't just ignore it and say. Come on baby. Infect me

For folks with normal immune systems, it's not that big a deal. A clear majority of the US population will test positive for herpes simplex (2 different variants), 65% to 90%, depending on who's doing the guessing. If you've ever had a cold sore, you're a carrier. It doesn't ever clear the body, it just goes dormant. Many people aren't aware that they're infected.

Clearly a minority have nasty experiences with the virus and occasionally there are serious complications. Why your friends chose not to take the simple and fairly effective precautions available to prevent infection is beyond me. I'm just saying that, in all likelihood, the consequences will not be all that great.

After 12 years of a very active sex life with a monogamous partner who had herpes, I remain unaffected. No special precautions were taken. Herpes can be transmitted even when there are no obvious active lesions. Even if there are active lesions there is no guarantee that the disease will be passed on. Still, it is probably a safer to use a condom during outbreaks and safer still to use a condom all the time. Even when the person with herpes is using an antiviral such as Valtrex on a daily basis to suppress outbreaks, the virus may be transmitted. The consequences of herpes genitalis are greater for women, with an increased risk of cervical cancer as well as a need for C section deliveries if there is an active outbreak to avoid eye infections and blindness in the newborn as the two big risks women face that men do not need to consider for themselves.

Will medications available many would say the increased pleasure of unwrapped sex, within a relationship where the main concern is the risk of contracting herpes, is worth the risk. I would be among them.

What an asinine thing to say. Contracting Herpes simplex 2 is a MAJOR consequence that affects ones life ENOMORMOUSLY.

Then please tell us how, and I quote, 'it' (herpes) "affects ones life ENOMORMOUSLY.''.

It's common sense really. Do I need to explain how HIV affects one's life enormously? Or cancer?

Perhaps you might want to look at all the support groups online for people living with Herpes Simplex 2, and maybe then you won't look at contracting Herpes Simplex 2 in such a casual manner... as if you're catchig a cold.

My bad. Obviously cold sores are every bit as devastating as Karposi sarcoma. What was I thinking?

Pharmaceutical companies are changing their strategic direction. I think GSK is doing that on its ED medicine advertisement. Before that there was a controversy on herpes drug ads. A lot of people thought those ads were emotional and misleading. I don't know why people think it that way. Look at Burger King and MacDonald, they do it all the time. But somehow pharmaceutical companies are trying to change their image. I hope their make-over works.

Part of the tragedy of herpes is that it affects individuals so differently. As someone here has said, individuals may be carriers for many years and never have an outbreak. Others have almost constant outbreaks and may be taking medication on a daily basis. If anyone has ever had a cold sore, they are carrying the herpes virus. The outbreaks may be confined to cold sores, but often it is the case that the outbreaks occur elsewhere, and it is possible to self transmit the virus from the cold sore to other parts of the body. If you have ever met anyone who has genital or anal herpes, you will know what a difficult and unpleasant infection can be. I agree this is neither a laughing matter or something to joke about. That being said, it is not like cancer, and I have never heard of anyone dying of herpes, although I suppose anything is possible. Best advise is to see a Dr. if you suspect you have herpes, even of the cold sore variety.

I dont think herpes simplex 2 is a laughing matter, or something to joke about. Wow how times have changed.

And some posters never change, from "What's that smell"...

"Last night was my 2nd time with this escort/hustler.

I was stunned that he just let me fuck him raw without a condom the first time I met him back in December."
