For those who don't know who I mean, he's this guy who plays his guitar and sings in Times Square near the TKTS island. All he wears is a cowboy hat, boots and a pair of white jockey shorts with "The Naked Cowboy" written on his butt. Whenever I see him he makes me smile. He seems real popular with the tourists and I hope does does well tip-wise.

He makes me think of the other NY characters I remember from years ago. Moondog, a blind composer/musician who used to stand all day long, every day on 6th Ave. and 53rd St. dressed as a Viking and holding a spear. He never moved or spoke to anyone. Roller Rina, a guy who used to skate all over the West Village in a billowy ball gown with a funny little hat and a fairy wand. This is pre-roller blades, so I'm going back aways. The Purple Man, an old guy dressed all in purple who rode a purple bicycle all over the city. They're all gone now, but at least we have the Naked Cowboy.

and a little trivia to add. Naked Cowboy is originally from Cincinnati, they have such strict laws on public "nudity" he kept getting arrested, so he made a logical choice and moved to NYC

You've set off my nostalgia alarm! I remember seeing Rollerina quite a few years back in my first visit to NYC in 1975. Thanks for the reminder, and the stroll down "memory lane".

The NYC Tourists love this guy. I can hear them saying "OH! there's the guy from the David Letterman show"...I always admired how white he got his underwear, I hope he has more than one pair that say "Naked Cowboy". :7 He must make out well with those tips from the tourists, they always want their picture with him.

My question is, can he really sing?...Even if he can't, he does put a smile on my face. :p

There's another one who's still around. Derek and I have been seeing him in Chelsea for years. He's a black guy who paints his face white (it's kind of chalky looking), has huge fake brilliant white teeth, wears Michael Jackson outfits from the 80's (the red Thriller jacket, or a tuxedo jacket with one spangly white glove) and is constantly demonically laughing to himself.

I've seen that guy, Rick. I don't think he's a fake; it is Michael.

Also, the short stocky drummer guy with the black slicked down hair, looks like he uses shoe polish to get it so dark.

I haven't seen him in a few years, although he's appeared in a few movies. Cool guy. Hope he's all right as well.

Well I'm a little flabergasdted (did I spell that right?...it sure doesn't look right) The The Naked Cowboy has his own web site. Boy, am I living on another planet. Honestly, I don't know how to react. I suppose I liked things (people) better when they weren't so commercial, but maybe it's a good thing...or not. I'm very, very confused. Story of my life I suppose. I guess "agog" really does suit me.
