From the comments on the video, it appears this is CHP? I am surprised though, having been pulled over by CHP for similar speeds-generally were decent . Anything over 100, I think they can throw you in jail on the spot. I never could wiggle myslef out of a ticket, but this is horrible? Where was it??

It is California Highway Patrol in Barstow, near Mojave Desert btwn L.A. and Vegas.

What would Broderick Crawford think?

You, nice little German boy !

We don't hear the expression "why are you driving in my country?" very often. :)

I've been stopped by the Highway Patrol only once (not for speeding, but because I took a wrong turn), the officer who talked to me was far less aggressive and he sent me on my way as soon as he saw that it was a rental car and I was visiting from overseas. I don't think that they like to deal with "tourists" ... although I'm more than convinced that the law should apply equally to everyone. Even if you're a nice little German boy. :)

As stereotypical as that CHiP was, he's not the norm. I can't remember a single time I've had one yell at me AND give me a ticket. It's one or the other...

Oh my Steven.. He sent you right away because you are hot! If I ever catch you speeding I will just flirt with you.

"Can I have your number.. I mean your driver license..."

"Your picture is nice on your license"

" Oops I dropped your registration on the floor so I need to pick it up" Bend and Snap~~~ it works all the time~~~

Outside of Arizona, you mean?

This smacks of a staged video that will show up on snopes.com sooner or later (probably sooner) as a fake.

This tape is getting all sorts of airplay, including national news, but all CHP is saying so far is "we're investigating".

That stretch of road between Baker and Barstow is flat, smooth, and the *average* speed when I've driven it has hovered around 85. (Once you cross the NV state line, the *posted* limit is 85.)

It still just doesn't ring true. It's possible some cop with delusions of grandeur and butt sex fantasies picked this tourist to pick on. I'm still skeptical.

I find it a bit odd too. I have driven that stretch multiple times as well as the 5 up north past the Grapevine. I have been tailgated at 90 , even 95mph by people asking me to get out of the fast line. Usually you hit 95 you don't have tailgaters but still have a string of cars following you at that speed. So that speed shouldn't be odd for CHP in that sector. My friend got caught doing 114mph and just got a ticket-I think it is a two point violation and you have to go to court.

The two or three times I was pulled over so far, the policeman was very decent. Not saying it can't happen-but just surprised. I totally understnad that and more (well a different sort of yelling)if he was doing it on city streets or a two way highway, but just surprised. If true, that is real bad though ! It sounds more like Freddie from Nightmare on Elms street in a cop uniform !!

Isn't California one of two party consent states? I think the German guy can't record this and post it online without the consent from the policeman. Am I wrong? Kisses and hugs~~~

I think the tape is legit, it will be interesting to see CHP follow it up. Perhaps Officer Friendly was having a bad day, and ran across some cute German tourist bois...

Well, if it truly was the Barstow office, it was probably the Baker Grade, where you're running straightahead and downhill for 11 miles. CHP loves setting up about 1/2 way down the grade and popping folks for speeding.

In the last 15 years, I've driven that route at least 100 times and at all hours of the day and night. I've never seen the Baker Grade without a CHP stopping a speeder, EVER.

Well, yes and no. It is a two party consent, where there is an EXPECTATION of privacy. Standing on the side of the road in his official duties as a speed cop might not fall under the two part consent rules.

I have seen someone getting into trouble for a similar event in a two party consent state and was wondering how it might work in CA.

We'd need a lawyer, but a public servant operating under the color of authority whether or not he has a expectation of privacy on a public thoroughfare shouldn't behavior has Mr. CHiP did. Two-Party Consent notwithstanding, Mr. CHiP should be counseled and maybe disciplined for his words.
